  My FI would tell you that you just need to register the day you send your invites out. UGH, Imma beat him senseless one of these days...

  
  

  You can register whenever you want, IMO. I'd say 4-6 months out, maybe? That way you've registered before any showers might take place. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

  I registered a month after we were engaged when I sent the Save the Dates out with our wedding website. We received an engagement gift from our registry a week after our STDs went out!
  
  It's never to early to register, and you can go on a add/change things as many times as you would like.

  I registered before I sent the STD out with our website on it so when people look at the website for hotel info than can see the registry etc

  We registered fairly soon after we were engaged, but that's because we figured we had the time to do it, so it was one less thing to think about the sooner we got to the wedding.
