Father/Daughter Dance

Since I was about 10 years old I thought I knew exactly what song I wanted to dance to with my dad on my wedding day.  Now that I'm 25 and know exactly what that song is about... it's so not the right song for us! 

I want it to be something special to us that means something, but I came across this Tracy Chapman song, The Promise and IT. IS. GORGEOUS!  I don't know if it's specific to father/daughter but it's about being far apart and wishing to be close to each other- He lives in MI, I live in AZ.  I thought it was a sweet song... Have any of you heard it or think it would be a good idea???

I'm having a tough time with this one!

    Did a youtube and a google search, because I wasn't familiar with the song.  It's very pretty, but I'm not sure that it's father/daughter appropriate?  Also, if you go with it, have someone edit it for you... five and a half minutes is a LONG freaking dance.

    The lyrics don't really seem appropriate for a father daughter dance but if your truely love it then you can do whatever you want. Although I would run it by your dad too.

    Some other suggestions would be:
    I Think About You - Collin Raye (if you want something a little fast and not as mushy)
    Turn Around - Nanci Griffith (one of my personal favs)
    I Loved Her First - Heartland (probably more common but so pretty)
    What a Wonderful World or Somewhere Over the Rainbow-Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (both are very pretty)

    I'm agreeing that 5 minutes is a little too long for the dance, if you're dead-set on it, maybe your DJ could edit a couple verses out in the middle to bring it down.  My Dad chose Sunrise,Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof:

    Is this the little I carried?
    Is this the little boy at play?
    I don't remember growing older,
    When did they?
    When did she get to be a beauty?
    When did he get to be so tall?
    Wasn't it yesterday when they were small?

    Besides being a beautiful song that makes me tear up just typing the lyrics, it's completely appropriate because my fiance and I have known each other since we were in kindergarten :)

    i had such a hard tim epicking a song i had my Dad pick the song he liked Tim Mcgraw "my little girl"

    The Promise is suchan awesome song but Im not sure if its right for father daughter.... at the same time its up to you and your dad and if you guys like it for your dance go for it! 

    My dad and I are dancing to Isnt she Lovely, my dad went home after I was born and put the recor on.... pretty much we've known this was our song since I was born :)

    Pick something you both will love and will bring happy memories everytime you think of it :)

    Thanks for the input!!  I didn't realize it was so long.. I'll keep looking.  This is going to be a tough one!  I was thinking Edelweiss from the Sound of Music... We shall see!

    I dont know that anyone pays attention to lyrics, I was at a wedding where they danced to my heart will go on from titanic and everone oohed and awwwed, I think you should dance to what you like, that being said, I like things to have meaning and would listen to the lyrics carefully for myself.
