Duluth Recommendations?

So I know this is the the Twin Cities board, but no one responds on the MN board so I thought I'd post it here! (sneaky I know!!)

Anyways, I'm just starting my wedding planning process and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for pretty much anything in the Duluth area! The only for sure thing I have is the reception at the Greysolon Plaza! It's in July so recommendations for ceremony spaces, photographers, DJ's, etc. etc. etc!!!

Thanks all!

If you are Catholic, there is an AMAZING church in Duluth that my grandparents got married at and all of my aunts and uncles and cousins got baptized at.  Its called Holy Rosary.  Its absolutely the most beautiful church I have ever been in and it overlooks Lake Superior. My SO and I were talking about getting married there in the future but he nixed the whole out-of-town wedding plan.  :(  But thats all I got for ya.  Good Luck.

Va Bene Caffe would make a nice rehearsal dinner venue.  I'm pretty sure they have a private dining option.  It's by the lake and serves excellent Italian food!

My photographer is from the Twin Cities but she travels all over for weddings :) Her name is Kate Botwinski and she is 100% my favorite vendor! We had our engagement pictures done with her back in April and I am in love with them. She was so much fun to work with and made it really fun and easy. check out her blog: www.katebotwinskiphotographyblog.com. And here is a link to our engagement pictures: www.katebotwinskiphotographyblog.com-mark-laura-are-engaged. Let me know if you have any other questions :) Good luck planning!

For most of your vendors, you can find them in the cities and have them travel for your wedding. I know my photographer, florist, wedding planner, etc. would travel for weddings. So if you make a post about specific vendors, people will post theirs with reviews on here and you can contact the ones that make your cut.

All of my vendors are in my bio with full reviews.

Photographers: My photog is based out of the Brainerd Lakes area but he does TONS of weddings in Duluth: www.vada-voom.com. Also, if you're a big fan of pure photojournalism, check out Derek Montgomery: http://www.drockphoto.com/

Florist: I'd stick with a Duluth vendor for this one. Peterson-Anderson and Engwall's have both been around forever, but Angela's Bella Flora is the best for weddings, in my opinion.

RD: Pickwick, Va Bene, Blackwoods, the list could go on and on here.

Hotel Block: The Sheraton is right across the avenue from GP, so that's a no brainer. The Holiday Inn would also be easier access for your guests, but it is a bit of a walk. Unless they're taking shuttles or cabs, I'd avoid the Canal Park hotels.

DJ: Sounds Unlimited - Jeff Anderson has done a number of weddings of my friends, and the dance floors are always PACKED.

Cake: The best cake I've had at a Duluth wedding came from the Vanilla Bean in Two Harbors.

Planners: Higher end - http://www.lauramullenevents.com/. Lower end - http://www.bbfweddingcoordinators.com/index.htm. The DOC concept is still a somewhat foreign concept in the Twin Ports.

Ceremony: If you're wanting something outdoors, Leif Ericson Park/the rose garden is always popular, as well as Glensheen Mansion. Enger Tower, Minnesota Point and Kitchi Gammi Park would also be good bets, depending on the size of your guest list. Sacred Heart Music Center has the church vibe without being a house of worship. If you're looking for a church, there are many many many. I know you don't need to be a member to marry at Chester Creek United Methodist. I was raised Lutheran but lived close to St. Paul's Episcopal and attended worship there for a few years. I'm not sure on their non-member policy but it was a wonderful congregation: http://www.stpaulsduluth.org/index.html

Good luck with your planning! FI considered Duluth as a wedding destination because it's halfway between his hometown and mine and it's where I'd like to move back to. It's such a fantastic place!

I second Pickwick and Fitgers for the RD.  My parents use to always take us there whenever we made the trip up there in the summer.

For the ceremony, you could go anywhere.  Glensheen would be beautiful, but I'm sure really expensive.  Would they do one for you at the lighthouse?

I have a few vendor lists from various hotels I looked at that I could send to you if you would like. Just give me an email address or something. Not sure how the private messages work but if you send me one I just need to know where to find it.

Photographer - I highly recommend Max Caven.  I hired him for my wedding at Giants Ridge next summer.  His photos are amazing, really high quality photo albums, very reasonable prices.  We just had our engagement session and he came down to Minneapolis for it.  He's young, but his work is awesome!  www.maxcaven.com if you want to check out his website.

Hello!  I just finished my vendor reviews for our wedding at Lutsen Resort.  Most of our vendors are from up the shore a bit, but we did have some people come up from the cities for things we couldn't find.

DEFINITELY check out Derek Montgomery (www.derekmontgomery.com).  He did our entire wedding and engagement pictures for $1600.  I know he's gotten more exspensive because we booked him when he was still relatively new to wedding photography, but he's still reasonable, he comes for the whole entire day (much more than the standard 8 hours if you need) and is so wonderful.  Also, we picked him because we wanted a photojournalism approach, but I will say that probably my favorite pictures he took were the formal posed ones.

    Have fun!
