Wedding Venue

My dream wedding is a destination BUT my grandmother isn't able to travel and our budget won't allow because we would have to pay for BOTH of our families to attend plus the wedding costs.  I am in SOWK and my fiancé is a student so needless to say money is tight.
ANYWAYS... the next best thing for us is to get married someplace on the water.   I have always wanted to get married on a large dock and since our wedding will be about 25 people it seems reasonable.  So my question is:  Does anyone know of a venue in MN (preferably metro or southern) that would have a beautiful large dock extending into the water?  Or even a beautiful waterfront venue that would feel intimate enough for a very small wedding?
Examples:

Re: Wedding Venue

  • The restaurant on Lake Como comes to mind - they have a pretty big patio that's RIGHT on the water, but I'm not sure if you can use it for a private event.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas - not much of a water person, sorry :)
  • Black Bear Crossings (Como Lake)
    Halloween
  • White Bear Yacht Club came to my mind, they have a really beautiful dock that reminded me of the pictures you posted.

  • I don't think there are too many places that will allow you to have your ceremony on a dock, but there are lots of waterfront areas and docks that would be great for photo ops, like Bayview in Excelsior or even the docks at Lake Harriet or Lake Calhoun.

That's the name of the one I was thinking of!  :D
  • Black Bear has docks, but they're not very wide so I don't think you could have your ceremony on them. But the promenade is beautiful and right on the water, and also covered so you don't have to have a rain back up. We're having our ceremony there - I have pics that I took in my bio if you're interested.

The other place that comes to mind is Noerenberg Gardens in Orono. It's on Lake Minnetonka, and one of the options is a gazebo that extends over the water. Noerenberg was actualy my first choice for ceremony venue, but it was too far from our reception site.

Also, I believe that Bayview Event Center in Excelsior, which PP mentioned, will allow you to have an outdoor ceremony right on the water if you have your reception there, so that might be worth looking into.
  • Silverwood Park also has a beautiful little island pavillion with a bridge that could possibly serve as a ceremony location.

  • Gale Woods Farms in Minnetrista doesn't have a dock, but from what I remember you could have your ceremony up on the hill top that looks down to the lake... I've seen pics and it looks gorgeous... And then there's a big red barn you could have your reception in.. Not sure thats what you are going for though

  • The Ampitheater at Centennial Lakes Park overlooks the lake and could have the reception in their centrum building, I know- not quite the same as a dock, but that place is gorgeous.

  • I can't remember the name of it but there's a place in Stillwater right on the river that has a gazebo. It's downtown.

What about renting a boat?  There's one in Stillwater, one in Taylor's Falls, a few in Mpls/St Paul.

Purgatory Creek in Eden Prairie.  It's not private though.
