Need Help with traveling with wedding dress

Im flying with my wedding dress and I dont know how to do it. I sure know that I dont want to check it and Im concerned with putting it in the overhead cause i dont want to get it all wrinkled and/or damaged. I cant afford to buy another seat for it. Anyone have ideas or life experience they can share?

  • Do you know someone who lives where you are going?  Maybe you can ship it to them in advance and have it steamed there?
  • I like norman's idea. Maybe you could even call your airline and ask if there is anywhere they can actually hang it on the plane you'll be on? That way it wouldn't get wrinkled?

I'm flying with my dress too, and having it steamed at a bridal salon after I arrive.
  • My best friend had a destination wedding and I was in charge of getting her dress there. I flew delta - I called before hand and they actually gave me priority boarding so I went on with the poleople with kids and then I had first dibs on the area of the plane in first class where people can hang their suits or jackets. A lot of airlines have similar areas for peoples suits. I would call your individual airline and run it by them.

  • If you call the airlines and explain the situation to them they'll most likely let you hang it in the coat closet.  Or you can see if there is a company that you can ship the dress to so they can steam it and it'll be ready to pick up when you get there.

  • Ditto on the first class suit area--just chat with the airline beforehand (even at the gate) and explain the situation. I don't see why they wouldn't accommodate a request like that! GL!

  • I've been trying to figure out the same thing actually. I have to get my dress from Georgia to Colorado. I think taking it on the plane sounds like a fabulous idea, and that way you know it will get there ok. I can't imagine that it would be a problem to do it that way.

Or you could UPS it to someone you know and just make sure to get delivery confirmation, insurance, and all that other good stuff.

    Good luck!

  • I think sometimes the airline can accommodate you to hang it in the first class closet and sometimes it's full.  I also like the idea of trying to ship it to someone if you can who wouldn't mind helping you by taking it somewhere to be pressed.

If neither of those options works out, wherever you are staying should have an iron.  Just get some help and press your gown on a low heat setting without any water/steam in the iron, and use a thin towel or pillowcase between your gown and the iron.  This worked fine when my mother and I pressed my gown for my bridal pictures.

Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
