March 2012 Weddings

How about this

I met a couple yesterday.. They got engaged the day after Thanksgiving, 2011 (a month ago...) are getting marreid February 16th! Holy short!

I cannot even imagine having less than three months to plan a wedding! I'm pushing it with my 5 month one, I don't think they were too thrilled when I think I just stared at them in shock when they told me this. haha

How long have you girls been engaged? What do you guys think is the perfect length engagement?

I think it varies by state too.. In Utah typical engagements are 4-6 months, so I fit into it just perfectly. But I'm guessing outside of Utah most engagements are longer?

Re: How about this

  • We were engaged in August and are getting married March 30. I definitely can't imagine planning the whole wedding in 3 months. I don't know that there really is an ideal length of engagement but 7 months is perfect for us. I think it depends on how much time you have to devote to planning and how much DIY you want to do. I'm glad ours isn't any longer because I'm already getting anxious!

  • We got engaged May 7 and are getting married March 2, so our engagement will be a total of about 10 months.

I don't think it necessarily depends on all states, however, I would agree that Utah engagements are much shorter than most, but that's because of the Mormons. (I'm not hating - I was raised Mormon.) They get engaged, married, and have children young. Fact of life. :)

I don't think there's necessarily a "perfect" engagement length. I think it most often depends on your age, length of your relationship, finances, and where you are in life. I would have LOVED to have gotten married in October because it's my favorite month for so many reasons, but I didn't think having 5 months was enough time to plan the wedding I wanted. Personal preference I guess.

  • FI and I will have a 9 month engagement, and we're getting married before many of my friends that were engaged earlier than June.  I think it depends on how long you've been with the person before getting engaged too.

  • We got engaged October 10, 2010. However, we left our family in agony, because for 14 months we didn't plan anything. We were trying to save $, and figure out what we really wanted. We just set a date on 12/27, and plan to get married on March 9, 2012. We have 67 days left! You just need to follow a timeline and check each item off as each day passes. I am loving it so far!!! Good luck with your planning!

  • We got engaged on 2/13/11, and are getting married on 3/9/12, so its basically a 13 month engagement.  Part of me wanted to get married in the fall, but it would have been difficult with all of the other fall weddings.  ( I didn't want to plan our wedding too close to anyone elses out of respect for their wedding and thinking about mutual guests and trying to make it easier on them.)

  • We got technically engaged (when he gave me the ring & actually asked) at the end of July but before that we were actually planning to elope in September. After checking out pricing to have a party at home after the elopement, we decided it would be easier on everyone (money and planning) to just have a real full wedding in March. We found out it's alot cheaper to have a destination wedding in New Orleans than to just do a party for family and friends here in Dallas. Everything is expensive in Dallas... So our engagement is going to be just over 6 months.

  • We're having a 22 month engagement. Yes you read that right. I can't imagine doing it in only 3 months.  My cousin did it and I hate to say it you could tell it was half assed.

  • Engaged May 10, 2011. Getting married March 3, 2012. So about 9 month engagement. Its been perfect for me. I agree it depends on the couple but I'm not a huge fan of engagements over a year. My thoughts kind of go if you're not planning on getting married for 2 years why get engaged so early? Its like buying a bunch of baby clothes the moment you decide to try to have kids and then it doesn't happen instantly.  But thats just me. I know that people who pay for their own weddings sometimes wait so that they may save up money. I get that.

I've told all my best friends that I wouldn't have an engagement longer than a year because of the agony of waiting :) Its plenty of time to plan a wedding. And its hard to do a lot of planning because things can change too. idk.
  • I agree with Whit.

I got engaged June 10th, 2011, and our date is March 11th.

9 months, one day. I don't think I could bare any longer, I would've gone crazy. The anticipation would've been awful. But it's funny how looking back I was like "Nine months? I have so much time!" and now I'm like "Two months? Crap! I need to tackle this today!" So I can't imagine 3 months. My sister did it in 3.5, and it was nice, but it was hard. Every single moment was about the wedding, there was no time for them to enjoy being engaged. Which is definitely part of the fun.
  • We were engaged July 8, 2011 and are getting married March 24. We had already started planning before our engagement was official, so when the time came we knew exactly what we wanted for our wedding. I still feel like a lot of it you can't do until the last few weeks...like right about now!

I got engaged last Christmas also so our engagement is about 15 months...

We have been together 11 years so we weren't in a hurry to set a date immediately after our engagement (which I couldn't believe as soon as we were engaged how many people asked the next day when was our date was...like seriously can't we have a minute to think about it! lol) We took two months to research ideas that we would possibly want to do for our wedding and honeymoon and decided on a destination wedding in Vegas. We also had our hearts set on a ski trip for our honeymoon. Since I am a teacher I am limited to when we could do the wedding without me having to use so many of my days (Summer, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break) and we can't ski during the summer so that was out. We didn't feel right planning the wedding during Thanksgiving or Christmas and making family fork out extra money during the holidays to travel to Vegas, so Spring Break was an easy choice for us.

We really started all the planning this past May which began with a short trip to Vegas to scope out venues. So I have only technically been "planning" for 8 months so far...

I agree with Britt...I dont' think there is a "perfect" engagement length...I really feel like it depends on a lot of factors like she said. However, I do cringe when people make a decision to get married after only dating for a short time. It's only because of my family (Mom's on marriage #5 and Dad's on marriage #3), but I feel like marriage is not something to take lightly if your in it for the long haul and jumping into it is just not a smart thing to do! Kind of like all these Hollywood peeps we have been gossiping about on here lately...

  • Wow that's a short time to plan a wedding. I got engaged on Valentine's day last year. So when we get married it will be a little over a year of being engaged.

  • We got engaged 5/24/11 and will be getting married 3/10/12, so about 9 months. I couldn't imagine having a longer engagment. For me, it would drive my nuts to have a year or longer to plan this. I am over all the planning and just ready for it to be here. Doing all of it in 3 months is a little bit much though.

  • I read in one of the wedding magazines that the 15 months is the average amount of time for an engagement. I thought it was pretty interesting!
We got engaged July 31 and the wedding is March 23, so we have an 8 month engagement.  I have to say the time has flown by, but I'm glad! We just want to be married, I'm tired of planning and couldn't imagine doing all of this for twice as long! :)

  • We got engaged Thanksgiving of 2010 and getting married 3/23 so its about a 16 month engagement. It's perfect for me I got to enjoy a few months of just being engaged and not planning anything. I started planning the wedding around March 2011 and it's given me plenty of time without needing to rush or feel stressed about running out of time.
  • Most people I know were engaged about a year or a little over (I guess that 15 month thing is correct - at least around here!).  We are doing it in exactly 6 months (engaged October 1, married March 31), and almost all of my friends and ALL of the vendors thought I was crazy!!!  I went to Kleinfelds (never planned on buying a dress there, just always wanted to go for the experience) On October 28 and when I told them my date, they looked at me like I had 5 heads and said "well you better be prepared to compromise b/c there's no way you'll get most dresses in that time!"  But my local salon was much more accomodating.

Anyway, I think 6 months is short, especially with the holidays in the middle of all that, but it's what worked out best for us, so it's what we're doing!  I don't think I could do it in much less time, just for the logistics of it all (getting the dress in, having any vendors available, etc.)
