Kinda freakin out about my dress

So my dress is in and I go try it on this Sunday. I'm super nervous!!! When I was shopping I tried on a 14 which is all they had. It was really big, so I was surprised that the girl told me by the designers specifications I should order a 10. I've never had a size 10 anything but I ordered what she suggested because I didn't want a dress that I needed to lose 20 lbs to fit into. It's all lace so I'm not sure how much in alterations they can do. Anyone else worried about the size of their dress?

Re: Kinda freakin out about my dress

  • Yes, but for the opposite reason. I ordered the size that she measured me as, which was one size bigger than what I tried on. The one I tried on, I couldn't really sit in, and my back fat looked really bad. So I went with the size up. Well, I have lost about 10-15 pounds since. I went to pick up my dress a couple of months ago and it was so big I could cry. It looked completely different on my body than when I tried it on. I didn't feel the same in it and was really disappointed. So now I'm just hoping that alterations can work a miracle.

  • They can take in any type of fabric- the fact that it's lace doesn't mean it can't be altered.  It's always better to have a large size than a small size.  A large size can be made any size smaller, but not the other way around.  Wedding dresses always run much larger.  Mine is a size 10 also and I'm a pretty steady size 4.  They had to take some things in, but it really wasn't huge on me.

You mean, wedding dresses run much smaller. Not larger.

Mine is 6 sizes higher than my street size.

  • I was worried because I had been told to order a size smaller than I normally wear and I'd always heard that wedding dresses ran small. I trusted my salon though and when it came in, it looked great on me! I still want to lose a little weight so the back fits nicer (it's a lace up back so there is some flexibility, but that's not a dress size problem.

  • The salon I got my dress at said the sizing runs small and recommended to order what looks good on you, it's just a number. Right now in pants I'm between a 10/12. The sample I tried on was a 14 and a little snug so when she took my measurements she advised on a 16. Now that I've lost a few pounds I know it will have to be taken in a little but hopefully I'm not drowning in it.

I wish I would have ordered a size larger because mine just came in and it is on the smaller side. It fits now but I am currently the smallest I have been in the last 10 years and I am afraid that if I gain any weight between now and the wedding it will be too small.

  • I'm a 6 in normal clothes and ordered a size 12 dress. I'm really busty so I had to order based on that.

I'm in the exact same situation... I'm a size 14/16... The dress I tried on was a 14... It pretty much fit (maybe a hair small, but not much)... I told her I was planning to lose about 15 lbs before the wedding, so she told me to order a 12.... I have never been a size 12 in my adult life... I haven't lost the full 15 lbs yet (thankfully, I still have plenty of time), but b/c of that, I'm not going to try my dress on when I pick it up this weekend... I know it won't fit yet... but I'm definitely terrified that I made a super big mistake and should have ordered the size that fit now.

  • My dress is an 8. I'm a 6 in regular street clothes. The dress fits around my waist, no room to take in, but its suuuuper big in the bust area. They're gonna have to take it in alot.

  • I have not even ordered my dress yet!!! I have been shopping twice and am running into the size/fit issue. I typically wear an 8 but am top heavy (36dd) and recently gained 15lbs. I have been trying on 14/16 and some will not even zip because of my chest. It is so hard to get a true feel for the dress because its super lose on the bottom and tight on the top....it's crazy. I am told alterations will work everything out but it is really making choosing the right silhouette hard. Good luck ladies! Any advance on how you made the decision despite the fit.

Sample dresses are always bigger than the size they say they are. They will put any size girl in a dress she can get into -  and they will just band her up if it's too small or clip her in if it's too big. For that reason listen to the designer and don't stress. Do I think they get you in alterations - yes, however, i'd rather have too much then too little. We are saving the left over pieces  of fabric and lace from my dress to make mother hankies with, the lace for my flowers and for when we have babies to sew into their chirstening gown(s).
