NWR: Career Change Anyone?

Ladies...I know I have been MIA but I have been doing a lot of thinking and soul searching.

I am currently an Accountant. My degree is in Accounting and that is what I have been doing for the past 12 years.

In my most recent job, I have come to the realization that this is NOT what I want to do anymore, however, I am pretty scared to make the transition.

Has anyone else gone through this?

Any words of advice?

I am sort of going through the same thing right now. I wonder if it's the environment that I am in that is making doubt my career choice but the only way to know that for sure to find a job in a different environment which has been hard to find. I also wonder if I didn't notice this before because all through grad school I was distracted by being involved in the community and in campus/national orgs. So it was sort of part time for me, now that I am working and living my degree..I am not feeling it. I am giving it time, trusting God and steady praying. Life is too short to be feeling "stuck" while on the other hand I am definitely grateful to have this job so that me and hubby are able to keep the roof over our heads. I guess no real advice, just know that you aren't the only one!

I feel you. I am teaching right now and have been for 12 years. Since I am relocating after I get married I want out of the classroom completely. I have no idea where to start or what to do. I did get some very helpful ideas from my knottie sisters so this is the place to be. Like Rowena I am just going to trust God and let him do his thing. GIrl just pray on it and it will all work out. Pray and sit back and watch him work!

Initially, that is what I thought too...when I say the environment is TERRIBLE, I really mean it...I have been belittled, insulted, job threatened, told I couldnt go home, etc...(mind you I have only been here since January) BUT I feel like me that was Gods way of whowing me that this is not the field for me. I was at Sony Pictures for 7 years and had I not left there, I dont think I would have been able to see it.

I love entertainment and that is where my heart it BUT I want something more on the creative side which is why I would like to get into marketing. It was definitely a hard and long decision but I think it is more me.

I would always wonder how people went to school and got degrees in one field and ended up NOT staying in that field but it all makes sense now.

Like you said, to find out if that is truly what it is, try the other field. At the end of the day, try it out. The good thing is, nobody can take away my experience or my degree so I can always come back to Accounting if that is what I decide to do.

DEFINITELY trusting God on this one...there is no other way that we can get through this alone. When I think about it, it scares the hell out of me BUT at the same time, as long as I put my faith in Him, I should be good...

I am in this same position right now and God kicked me out the door on Tuesday because I wasn't moving fast enough and was settlig with where I was. NEvertheless, have you thought about looking into a marketing analyst type role? I know with THD there were specific marketing analysts who worked in marketing finance and they basically tracked how the different marketing efforts did for the company. That could give you the use of yourbackground and give you some of the creativity you need. You could also look into merchandising. Buyers and merchants that have a numers / details / quantitative background is always a plus because they can see the feasibility of the decisions for the company. Good luck! Career changes and paths are normal so just pray about it and move when He tells you too!
