Ketosis

Hello lovlies,

I would like all of your opinions about this. My friend went on a "ketosis" diet meaning that she only had 30g or less of carbs a day. She would eat high fat and only certain fruit with lots of cheese as well. She lost 70LBS in 9 months and she says she has never felt better.

A mutual friend of ours that she recommended the diet to has been doing it for a few weeks and he says he feels great as well but no weight loss yet.

I've been reading online that this diet MIGHT be dangerous. It says that could cause kidney failure, etc. But I've also read that this is what the Inuits use for a diet and they live long and very health lifes.

Has any one heard about this diet? Any opinion on it?

Re: Ketosis

  • K - Thanks for the tip. I have heard about that Paleo diet but I haven't checked it out. Maybe I will. I don't think I really like the diet that much because I'm not a big cheese fan or egg fan and that's basically stuff you have to eat on this diet. Thank you for the support and also the advice.

Stage - I don't think any one should judge or tell someone else HOW to eat. I'm sorry that you have people like that that you work with. My boss is similar where as she says that I should just not eat at all "like she does" to drop all my weight.
  • Ketosis is AWFUL for you.

I was on medical weight loss for 7 months and managed to lose 90 lbs. Medical weight loss "works" because you're "prescribed" a 700 calorie a day diet (purely made up of fake protein crap) that knocks your body down into ketosis. To stay in ketosis you have to maintain under 1,000 calories per day (different for everyone, but when I was on this diet I was told if I went above 900 calories I would put myself out of ketosis and weight loss would stall).

My hair thinned significantly and shortly after I got off this diet is when I started experiencing joint problems. The kidney failure thing is no joke either - I had to go in for regular blood tests once a month so they could check that none of my organs were failing....Seriously, I would never recommend anyone put their body into ketosis for extended periods of time, it will do more long term damage to your body and the minute you get out of it you WILL gain weight back.

Tell your friend to find a healthier more sustainable way to lose weight.

  • Amber, did she feel better physically? or did she feel better about herself? Those are 2 very different things.

Kwith- ditto on the "enemy" food group. Nothing is the enemy specifically- habits are the enemy- such as my favoritsm of white bread and butter sandwiches for dinner during college. A slice of white bread and a pat of butter isn't bad and going to ruin your figure. A plateful, however, is. See the difference?

The ketosis thing reminds me slightly of the Atkins diet, except with atkins, if I remember correctly, you slowly reintroduce carbs slowly.

And, geographically speaking, I feel like it was diet the Inuits were accustomed to because of their lack of fresh produce year round. They needed high fat because of their living conditions....

I agree with this, and wanted to add that the Inuit diet is typically high in wild game, so the meat they ingest is leaner and not processed. They also eat a lot of berries when in season, but not a lot of other fruits. But bread is a part of the diet too - nothing is off limits, they just have different portions.

I've never been one to subscribe to the evil food club - it never made sense to me, but I see so much of it. even now that I'm gluten sensitive, I don't eliminate it, just watch what I'm doing and take it easy. Allergies are different, of course, but I'm not there so it's not an issue.

    Maybe that's why I don't think I should have to totally give up on soda. It's not evil ... it's always been so good to me ... *sigh <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />

  • I know you already you stopped, but I want to give some more information on why this is a terrible idea.

When you go into ketosis, your body starts using fatty acid stores for energy.  Which is all well and good, except not every body process can use them.  Want to know which part of your body suffers the most?  Your BRAIN.  This is why people on Atkins suffer mood issues and memory loss.  Your brain cannot use these fatty acids.

Also?  Keeping your body in a prolonged state of ketosis puts you at risk for acidosis, which is basically when you overwhelm metabolic processes and your blood becomes more acidic.  You overwhelm your kidneys, and you can die.

Your friends might want this information.

  • J&K - Thank you for responding to my question. I know her mom was sending her articles to read about the negative affects that it could have on you but she just LOOKED so healthy, energetic, and happy. I just thought, even though it sounded unhealthy, that it must be working in a way I couldn't understand. After every one's responses though I am definitly going to try to talk to her about it and I am not going to continue with the diet.

    Thank you again.
  • Some people do do better on a very low carb diet.  It's also possible she wasn't actually in ketosis.  If she was eating extremely low carb but not severely restricting her calories, she probably wasn't in ketosis and just thought she was.  Another possibility is she restricted grains but not carbs, and didn't count fruits and veggies.  You probably know more about what she was doing then I do.  It's possible her diet was perfectly fine.  If she was truly in ketosis for 9 months+, I doubt she'd continue to look healthy and energetic.  Eating extremely low carb will not automatically put you in ketosis.

Many diet tricks such as going ultra-low carb (so a Paleo version of ketosis, less than 50g of carbs a day but no necessary caloric restriction), if done properly and if a person has already tuned in to Paleo before dropping carbs to under 50g a day, it is not dangerous. BUT it is also meant to be a "hack" and not a lifestyle change. It works well for obese individuals of both genders, as well as for men who are already lean, but it is one of those many diet tricks that does not work well for women who want to lose those last 15 pounds etc. The female body is just stubborn.
