Cali?

Hi Knotties, As plans come together, I'm getting pretty excited about the wedding, but I'm equally psyched about the honeymoon getaway. The FI and I have thrown around a few ideas, and the front-runner  is a California vineyard tour. We spent some time in northern California in August for a friend's wedding, and we had a blast. The scenery is beautiful, lifestyle easygoing, and the food and drink delicious -- all without the cost or flight time of a European trip. But, there's a catch. Since moving away from New Orleans (we're both New Orleans natives, but we live in Chicago now, and we're planning our NOLA wedding long-distance), I'm not much on driving, but a car is a must in California. My FI is a great navigator, however he isn't crazy about getting behind the wheel -- especially after an afternoon sipping the valley's finest Merlots. So here's the quandry.... how do we get all the foodie fun of a Cali honeymoon, but with the same relaxation of a typical, all-inclusive beach vaca? If anyone has taken a similar California trip to Napa or thereabouts or has other honeymoon destination suggestions, let me know! Thanks!

Re: Cali?

  • You can hire a private driver or take a pre-established tour - this is really common in Napa since obviously if you're wine tasting you'll be drinking.

This. We went to Napa for our HM. We got a private limo for the day and had them make a schedule of the wineries we wanted to see. We went through Beau Wine Tours. They also do shared limo tours and bus tours if you want to keep it less expensive. We got a complimentary bottle of champagne, plus water, etc in the limo as well. It was really nice.

Also, we stayed at a B&B in Napa itself so we could walk to the restaurants, bars and tasting rooms. There are tons of tasting rooms in Napa. If you go to the visitor's center you can get a card for $20 that gets you free tastings at a lot of them.

However, I might rent a car anyway. Unless you want to pay for an airport transfer from SF or Sacramento. You could also split your time between SF and Napa, as many couples we met did. (We drove up there ourselves and ended up driving through SF on our way home.)

  • Thanks for all the recommendations everyone!

Good to know that there are lots of tours set up already. I think it's nice to have the option to do a group or maybe rent a private car for a day or two.

MsMery - did you like the B&B you stayed at? Would you share the name of the hotel and another other fave restaurants, vineyards, outings?

    Thanks again!
