More signs that facebook is out to ruin your life.

I recently became facebook friends with one of my ex boyfriends who I havent seen or spoken to in about seven years.   Apparently, he is a total facebook douchebag.  You know the type - -  updates his status every hour about details of his day no one could possibly care about, publishes every single thing he does on Farmtown or fishville or SuperCafe or whatever the hell they're called.   Takes a billion quizzes and comments on what the results mean as if theyre clinical.  I completely judge him as a person based on his facebook activity.  Every time I see him pop up on my feed with this crap, I am horrified and embarressed that I ever dated such a goober.    You sir, should never have gotten my virginity.

So anywho, what kind of stuff do people do on facebook that makes you pass judgement on them or causes you to think they are the suck?  Anyone have any good stories?

  • I also immediately write off anyone who has that pouty fish face pose accompanied by a gang sign as their default picture.  Even more so if they are over the age of 21.

  • A bunch of former high school classmates cannot make it through a single status update without a huge glaring spelling or grammatical error.  I started checking to see what these people do for a living now that they don't need to know the difference between there/their/they're.  Yeah, they're teachers.
  • I used to be FB friends with a guy that would post suicidal status updates like "It's just not worth it anymore" and "No one will ever love me, what's the point?". Then he would have like 20 comments from random girls offering to cheer him up. It soon became obvious that his suicide threats were just lame pick up lines for loser women.

I unfriended him, but sometimes wish I didn't just because I was mildly amused by how stupid and transparent he was.

  • I have one FB friend from HS who always needs to be updating her status.  She is always talking about  her daughter.  If you didn't know her very well you would not know she has a son.  It's makes me sad.

Other than that my FB friends are okay.  Maybe it's because we are older?   Not sure.  But they are pretty tame.

I do notice that a lot of my friends have older kids.  We all seem to be friends with those kids, which keeps everyone in check and not posting inappropriate things.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Jules, I taught for 3 years. I'm mortified when I see former El Ed classmates and former colleagues put up status updates - their spelling is horrific.  I guess I focused on the wrong thing, since I  am no longer teaching, huh?

I have a high school classmate (I've posted about her before) who - nearly daily - posts about how much her job AND her boss sucks.  She even posts things like pondering how much a temp is going to get paid (not an amount, but a comparison), and blatantly talks about what a terrible place it is. She posted about looking for a new job, about a place she put in her resume, about that place not having called her back for an interview yet (and someone posted to her that the scheduler was out of the office), and then that she'd gotten a new job and turned in her 2 weeks notice.  Today, it was that her boss is questioning payroll and having more than one person review it.

She's truly an idiot, and it makes me wish her boss would catch wind of it somehow. Of course, she DID threaten to beat me up on the bus in 7th grade because I didn't smile, too.....

Then, there's the couple of religious zealots, and the celebrity worshippers.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • I get a lot of emails asking for help on farmtown, crops, some restaurant thing.

Why email me?  I don't have facebook.

I do raise my eyebrows a bit about women my age who have facebook though.  I'm sure it's fun for some people, I just don't see the point.  You have my name, you have my phone number, and I assume you can write.
  • FI and I always laugh because we keep seeing his mom and his mom's friends sending out viruses. Bless their hearts. They'll open anything. It makes us laugh to picture his mom clicking on the message from her friends that says "Look at  what I found in the bathroom". Poor little old ladies, they just keep sending the virus back and forth to eachother.
  • A old friend from highschool that's on facebook always has an update that's either 'Why am I still up?'  'So tired and too much to do.'  'Insomniafest day xx'  I get it your tired...get off the facebook and go to bed.
  • I have people who invite me to their random, lame community theater productions in other states. Which clearly means they just mass invite everyone on their FB.

  • Definitely the people who don't shut up about their kids.  I don't care that they did something cute, it probably wasn't even cute.

  • I have a friend who I absolutely adore, but I cringe inside every time I see him use smileys on facebook.  You're 37!  And Male!  Why are you using emoticons?!

  • I used to do theater with a group of adults that are apparently the most immature people on the face of the planet.  Their FB statuses are always the vague "I hope you're happy with your choices." and other ridiculous crap like that.

I'm so glad that I stopped hanging out with them.  It baffles me that they act like their teenage kids.

I think I'm going to announce that I'm pg and then unfriend them.  I just don't care anymore.

  • I just got a friend request from a person with a man's name,  but the picture is of a girl. We have no friends in common. It's weird.
  • One of my cousins just broke up with his girlfriend and one
of his recent FB statuses (he updates every 2ish hours, and they're all similar in nature) was the following:

(Cousin's Name) is realy afraid my time on this earth is growing to a close. I won't kill myself, though I surely would like too, but i can feel my life draining from my being and I truly feel I am dying of a broken heart and a broken will and a broken soul, and I know not how to fix these things. Somebody please help me!!!!!

I know he's hurt and I hate that this girl left him, but Facebook is NOT the appropriate venue for this.  Underneath every status update are 20 or so people saying things like "No, don't give up on life!"  It's ridiculous.

Sidenote, he's 38 years old.  He should know better.  End rant.
  • omg, he's 38????

  • Yep, 38... almost 39.

I get that breakups are hard, but honestly -- is Facebook the place to turn?  Good God.
  • I understand the "Lord is good"  and all that and he's your "saviour", I just don't need to know it.  I get irritated at the religious proselytizing.  I get it, you go to church.  Yay for you.
  • I really judge my FB friend who is a stay-at-home mom, yet manages to update her status a couple of times per day, publish everyfuckingthing she does on farmville, etc. You have a toddler, how the hell do you have time to play on the computer this much?
  • Oh good Lord.

I've got one like that in my friends list, too - a "woe-is-me-er." She's not as bad as she once was.  I get where she's coming from (I understand her feelings), but I don't think I would ever broadcast them to that wide of an audience. But, maybe I'm thinking in terms of my friends list, and her audience is like 30 people or something.

The kid is probably propped in front of the TV watching The Wiggles during mommy's computer time.

For some reason I am FB friends with girls who write like this:

Hiiiiiii!!! I miss youuuuuuu!!!  Last night was funnnnnn!!!! We need to hang out again soonnnnnn!!!  Loveeeeeee youuuuuuuu!!!!

Not kidding.  Like 8 of my friends write the last letter of each sentence about 20 times.  I guess it's a new way to emphasize?

  • I generally dislike the people who post things that are very vague that obviously looking for attention "not sure what to do now", "doesnt know if she can handle this" etc. I dont like it when people post every freaking thing they do "going to the gym", "making dinner", "watching survivor, text me!!". I also dont like the people who post 50million pictures of their kid, ONLY, and invite you to join every stupid application they play because they stay at home all day and its obvious thats all they do.
  • This one girl from college is BSC.  She plasters every fight with her boyfriend all over her FB wall.  This exchange was my fave:

BSC girl:  "b*** wanna play we'll see who wins!!!!! Going to my lawyer. Hope you like stripes"

One of her friends commented:  i'm sorry to hear that almost every day you have an issue with someone and you wish them ill will... at some point you should just let go. focus on what you want in life and stop worrying about how others have done you wrong and what you can do to get back at them. a waste of your valuable time. it obviously isn't doing you much good, at least that's what everyone sees from your status's. being bitter and angry doesn't look good on you or any lady! best of luck, girl.

BSC girl:  some crazy comeback justifying her actions.

I commented, agreeing with her other friend, and basically said FB isn't the place, get a diary.

    She deleted all our comments.
