Name Change

As a disclaimer, I am one of those crazy, type-A people who thinks and rethinks things when they should probably just make a decision already...!

I am getting married next week, and I am still struggling over what to do about my name.  In most situations, I just want to go by his name (Mrs. Smith), but I don't  want my current last name to just evaporate, either.

I  am sure that I don't want to hyphenate, but I don't really know what my other options are.  I think that I just want his last name to be 'tacked on' to the end-- so my ideal name would be First Middle Maiden Last, but I don't think that I can do that without going through the courts and paying for a name change to make my current last name a new middle name?
Any ideas/help that you can provide would be very much appreciated!  Smile

Re: Name Change

  • I kinda struggled with that too at first. But then I realized that our kids, won't have the same last name as mine. That kinda made my decision easier for me. lol. BUT If your really struggling, why dont you do your first name, then your maiden name (as your middle name) then your new last name. Good Luck :)

  • I love my last name.  So I plan on holding onto it by having a hyphenated middle name.  Most places only look for middle initial, so having a hyphenated middle name should be way less of a hassle.

    I'll be Elizabeth Middle-Maiden NewLast.

  • My MIL changed her middle name to her maiden name.  It worked perfectly for her professional career.

  • I'm pretty sure you shouldn't have to go to the courts to just tack on his name to yours. You are already going to be filing a name change legally in order to take his name at all.

  • I legally kept both last names, un-hyphenated. So my legal name is now FirstName MiddleName MaidenName MarriedName. It gives a bit of flexibility, as I can go simply by Mrs. MarriedName, or use MaidenName MarriedName on professional/legal documents since I kept them both as last names instead of transferring my maiden name to a second middle name.

  • I'm thinking i want to do what you are thinking (first middle maiden newlast) but my mom did what others have mentioned (first maiden-as-new-middle newlast). I'm not sure yet what FI will think about me wanting to keep my maiden name, but i for sure want to be Mrs. NewLastName.
What does your FI think about it?
  • I am adding his last name to mine.  I just posted this in the Sept 2010 boards.  I don't want to lose my last name that has been with me all my life.

I've struggled w/ this too and even made a post about it.  As other pointed out once children are involved, I'd want to share the same last name w/ them so I'm doing it as many others have said...Firstname MiddleName MaidenName NewLastName.  How many times will you actually have to write out all 4 names, right!

I have a last name that gets mis-spelled ALL THE TIME.  I've been stoked to get it changed ever since I can remember.  I've already printed out the paperwork for the Texas DPS office and Social Security office and we have like 3 /12 months till our wedding!  You can do any of those suggestions from pp.  Just see what "flows" to you.  Maybe practice writing out your name in a few different ways and see what you like best.
