Lent...

When do you ladies consider Lent "over"? I was talking with my boss who is also catholic, and she says we can start doing what we gave up on Saturday, but she's also one who discounts the sundays during Lent. I typically keep my lenten observances on those sundays and have in the past done so until Easter Sunday. Just wondering what everyone else does...

Re: Lent...

  • Something came to me today as we are on Easter now...

Personal devotions/penances/practices are one's own, and whatever you feel you need to work on is your own decision about continuing them on Sundays or not...there isn't a right or wrong to this

But I think there is something great in the church's wisdom to the ebb and flow of liturgical seasons and solemnties breaking up the seasons. To me, its so awesome that just about the time that it gets a bit challenging, there is relief. Ash Wednesday, Fri, and Sat..3 days to start off lent, then a day off. Gets you going...thinking "That wasn't so hard". You start off slow and build endurance. Then a few weeks, with a break each week. And then not only Sunday, but a solemnity of celebrating. 2 days per week for 2 weeks in a row. This shows me that the cross isn't too hard. Then, after the more intense 2 days, there are 8 straight days of solemnties. (Same with the octave of Christmas).

Then Easter season has 50 days over Lent's 40 days. The beginning of the liturgical year starts off with a penitential season of Advent (with an extra solemnty).

It's all just so wise I find it awesome to engage in those little joyful celebrations even amid suffering.
