Zumba

Hello lovlies,

There is a Zumba class at my gym tonight. I have done it once before and I did find it fun but I'm really scared about going tonight. I really want to go and enjoy myself but I'm going alone and I'm afriad that people will judge me because I have two left feet and hips that don't cooperate with music.

Any suggestions? I guess I'm just looking for a pep talk.

And for those of you who go to Zumba on a regular basis, how do you find it that newbies join in? Is it a class that elevates with moves every week? I don't want to be a newbie then go in and have some scary moves I can't contend with and look out of place.

Tips?

Re: Zumba

  • Don't worry about it. As long as you go and make an attempt at it, you have nothing to worry about! The people who catch my attention are the ones that just kind of stand there and don't make any effort to at least TRY the moves.

Every zumba class is different (as in, different places and teachers etc) so my class may not be like your class, but we do a few set routines every class and then every few weeks or so the teacher will add in something new (not necessarily harder).

Just go and have fun! People don't go to zumba with the intention of judging others!! :)

  • Honestly, just go and have fun and stop worrying about it.

I personally prefer the group classes like Body Combat and Body Pump where it's much more mechanical and less dance-y specifically because I know I can't dance and the rythems don't make as much sense to me, but if you enjoyed it that's all that matters. I'd bet a lot of other people are also just starting out with it and having the same exact insecurities.

  • Thank you both. I am going to go and not worry about it. I'll try my best and burn calories.

    Thanks again ladies
  • I honestly love it when newbies come bc you can tell they are nervous but i tell each and every one the same thing: Just keep moving thats all that matters. Oh and have fun otherwise you won't come back :)

  • I have been doing group fitness classes for years and I can promise you that WE HAVE ALL BEEN NEW at some point!!!
I LOOOOOVE seeing new people in my fitness classes. It's so excited to see people start their health/fitness journey, continue it, or just try something new.
DO NOT feel judged! We have all been the new one, the uncoordinated one, the one that slips and falls or turns the wrong way, etc.
I have fallen TWICE on a step in BodyStep, and I'm a "veteran" stepper. lol It happens! If people aren't friendly, welcoming, and supportive (which more likely than not they will be) you are in the wrong place, and shame on them!

  • Just go for it!

the zumba class I used to take took about 4 classes before you get to know the routines and can anticipate the next moves easier. I also have no rhythm and am very uncoordinated. because of that I always stayed near the back of the class because I didnt want anyone else losing there place because they were looking at me.

like entropic, I eventually moved on to other more mechanical classes.
