NWR-Advice and thoughts needed!

First I'm going to apologize if this seems insensitive as I've seen a few posts recently about layoffs and job troubles but I really need some outside opinions...
I've been working at the same job for seven years, three different departments, I'm currently making abround $16/hour, full time, benefits, 401K etc. I'm very comfortable there but it's also owned by a large nation corporation and we are a very small branch, things are going downhill-hardly ever making budget and several years of layoff and furloughs. I've been thinking it's time to move on.

This afternoon I was offered a job at a bank as a financial services csr, same general set of benefits, only $13/hour, but in a growing industry, more possiblities for movement in the company, new skills to learn and beef up my resume etc. Is it work the pay cut? I just can't seem to come to a clear answer with myself. I also tend to dislike change, it makes me anxious and apprehensive but I refuse to let that keep me from getting a new job but I'm sure it has some impact on the current impasse.

Sorry this is long, and thank you for reading if you got this far!

  • This is a decision that only you can make.   I am in a similer situation.  I hate my job at i get paid 20 plus.  After the wedding i will look for a job.

my only advise is that you look at all the options and don't try to sabotage your self or your husband to be.  Becareful.  You also are getting married soon.  If you start a new job are you ok taking time off?  Is this another set of problems you have to deal with?  Can you handle it?  All things to consider.  Waiting a little bit isn't always a bad thing either.

  • If you think you are going to lose the other job I would say 13 an hour is better than 0!
  • I would take the new job, it sounds like your branch is tanking. Perhaps you can negotiate with them for a slightly higher rate of pay, like $14 or $14.50. Basically split the difference with them.

  • Excellent points about start times, available vacation, and if you and FI will be trying to purchase a home soon. I've been with my company 12 years, and see our tenured staff looking and often leaving for jobs that are initially at less pay. I have to encourage them. With salary caps and virtually no chance for advancement, you truly weigh what is in your best interest. If benefits and opportunities will be there - losing current pay isn't necessarily more than an immediate inconvenience. Ultimately, you and FI need to have this discussion before making the final call. When you see the writing on the wall as current employers suffer - I understand weighing that as well!

FI and I talked about it, we already own a home and we can still live comfortably with the pay cut, he makes quite a bit more than I do. He told me last night that it was entirely up to me and that if I will be happier in the new position than it's worth the income loss.

What I decided to do was email the HR rep I had spoken with and tell her my situation honestly-what I currently make, that I would be willing to take a pay cut but not quite that much AND that I wouldn't be able to start until 10/15 because of my wedding and honeymoon. The ball is in their court right now, they can come back and tell me that their current offer is as high as they are willing to go in which case I will stay where I am. If we can come to an agreement than I will move.

Thank you everybody for the advice, it really helped simplify everything!
