Am I Supposed To Invite The Officiant?

Hi ladies,
Stupid question - we booked a non-denominational officiant to marry us that we've never met and have no religious affiliation with.

At a wedding that I attended last year the couple invited the officiant to the reception afterwards - though I'm not sure if they had a prior relationship with her or not.

Am I supposed to send an invitation to our officiant?  Am I expected to invite them to the reception afterwards?

I don't have much experience with weddings, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
p

Re: Am I Supposed To Invite The Officiant?

  • If your officiant is a paid stranger, like the musicians or florist, the officiant does not have to be invited to the reception.

If your officiant has a relationship with you or your family (or your fiance or his family) outside wedding life, the officiant and any spouse or partner should be invited to the reception, even if the officiant is also paid a fee or honorarium.
  • Thanks, that's very helpful!
  • Thanks! I was wondering about this as well!

Elisabeth is spot on.  Vendors, which is basically what your hired officiant is, don't need an invitation because they're not guests, but are hired to do a job.  Ditto DJ, photographer, etc.
