June 2012 Weddings

vendor tipping

3 of my vendors own their businesses, but will have assistants with them. I read that if they own their own company tipping is not necessary, since they get most/all of the money anyways. Do I still tip, or no? If so, how much a percentage or just what we want?

Re: vendor tipping

  • Listening in, I have the same problem with 2 of my vendors.  For the photographer I'm especially confused because the assistant won't be doing any of the post-wedding editing, just be there the day of.  We also have this situation with our DJ.

  • I have a photographer that owns the business, and a second shooter that I am paying 350 for. So I am tipping that second person 15 of that fee. That's the only "assistant" I have to tip.

  • I'm confused about this too.  My photographer's assistant is his wife.  He's not charging anything for her, so should I tip her or not?
  • Owning the business or not, I'm still tipping all of my vendors.

  • I brought this up to my parents last night who are paying for the wedding. They had never heard of it. I told them we should but now we don't know how much. I'm also curious...

  • I'm giving a $40 - $50 tip to pretty much everyone, regardless of "owning" their business or not.  It's probably too much, but oh well.  At this point, a few dollars extra doesn't matter to us lol.

  • If they own the business they won't get a tip unless they go above and beyond what is in the contract.  Assistants will get a tip though as well as anyone else (waitstaff, etc).

  • I have never heard of tipping your wedding vendors and no one has mentioned it or asked us about it. I have no extra money so I guess I'm not going to. Oh well.

  • Thankfully with our wedding being fairly small we just have the owner of the businesses doing the wedding. And as for the waitstaff at the venue, which is a casino, we already had a service charge and grautiies built into our contract. So I guess unless someone goes above and beyond we hadn't expected really to do much tipping based on all the guidelines we have read. We our paying 100% of our wedding and so the budget is beyond spent lol
