To eat or not to eat?

Okay, here's the situation:

I have my daily calorie goal set for 1450. Today I have only eaten 1149 so far. I also then went to the gym and burned 350 calories. According to MyFitnessPal, my net calories are only 799 - and to get up to 1450 I need to eat another 651 calories to get up to my goal intake or another 401 to get to 1200 since that's the minimum you should eat.

I planned poorly today, and it's now 11:00pm where I am and you're not supposed to eat right before going to bed (at least that's what I've read!). My stomach is grumbling.

Question: What would you do? Eat the calories? Up to 1200 or 1450? OR Not eat since it's right before bed?

I think am going to eat up to 1200 calories, and then go to bed 20 minutes later....but I feel guilty about it. I really hope that this doesn't sound as stupid as I think it does.

Re: To eat or not to eat?

  • Do you feel hungry?
If so, go grab a lean protein.
Grab a few slices of deli meat and/or a string cheese.. something with protein in it for your bod to eat on.. but if you're going to bed soon, I wouldn't bother with a full meal.
  • Appreciate the advice. Will do!

Also, did you notice that your post was number 6666 for you? Crazy! That's a lot of posts! Smile

  • oh crap.. I'm like super devil.. until this.. now I'm back to normal devil.. must.. get.. to... 6670.... :P
Yeah I didn't even notice that I made "gold" wow... I should really study more and knot less :o
  • Eating right before bed isn't necessarily a BAD thing.  The worst thing is that it makes your digestion happen more slowly, and that can keep you awake a bit too.  But it's not you like you won't use any of the calories and they'll go straight to your ass or something--that's a myth.  You burn calories even while sleeping.

When I'm hungry right before bed, I usually have a glass of milk and see if that helps.

And you definitely should plan a little better!  A couple super low days every once in awhile surely won't tank your metabolism, so you're ok there--but I think you know enough than to make it a habit, which is why you're concerned.

  • ^ truth.. I just always feel crappy if I eat too much.. Milk is a smart move, although I'm sensitive to sugar so it wouldn't work out well for me.

OP try to keep a few things in your car like a banana, power bar, etc. Like OP said, plan better... but I know that's hard to do ALL the time. I try to keep a banana and apple in my car for right after workouts :)
  • Eating right before bed can be bad for you, IF you have acid reflux. It's not a problem for most people, but if it gets bad, it can be quite painful. Things like dairy right before bed can set your tummy off making crazy amounts of acid. Try to limit eating right before bed, and if you ever notice acid symptoms, then they recommend no food or milk for two hours before bed. Hope that is helpful!
  • Thanks for the help everybody. I'll definitely keep a snack in the car from here on out! Although for me it's going to have to be an all bran bar or something with very little moisture to it.. since it's -15 outside :)

Good to know about the eating before bed thing not actually being that bad for you also. I just didn't want my work out to go to waste!! But I also didn't want to starve.. lol.
