Cruise

We have decided to go on a carribean cruise for our honeymoon. I don't know anyone who has been on a cruise before. Is there anything I should know about cruising? What types of things are you allowed or not allowed to take? What is security like? How long before the ship leaves should we arrive? Any tips would be appreciated.

Re: Cruise

  • Check out cruisecritic.com.  it is a wealth of information about cruising in general as well as specific to each cruise line.  If you don't already have a cruise booked, I'd look there and find a cruise line that suits your wants/needs that also offers itineraries to to your desired location.

As for what you can/can't take, security and boarding time information, each line has its own set of rules, so once you should check the individual line's policies.
  • mostly all of your questions are answered on the cruiseline's website.

  • Cruisecritic.com is awesome. I was obsessed with it in the months leading up to my cruise. My general suggestions are:

    1) Bring shoes that are comfortable to walk in. If you like wearing flip flops, make sure they won't be too slippery on a wet deck.

    2) Try to sneak your own liquor on board. Many will disagree with me, but honestly, the drinks I paid for on my cruise were TERRIBLE (other than beer). I expected that they wouldn't have much alcohol in them, but I didn't expect that my pina coladas would taste like they had dishwasher detergent in them :-(

    3) Choose at least one cool "excursion" to spend money on.

    4) Bring things to do in case of a rainy day (playing cards, board games, etc.)

All of your other questions will be answered in the materials you'll recieve from your cruise line well in advance of your departure date.

If you're flying to the port you're taking the cruise out of, I highly suggest flying in the day before to make sure you don't miss your cruise due to flight delays/cancellations. This happened to friends of ours and they missed their cruise and had to fly to the first island stop and meet up with the ship a few days later. Way too much stress and expense! Plus, you'll get to enjoy the city the cruise leaves out of and be worry free about missing the ship the next day. We did this for a cruise out of San Juan, so we flew in a day early and spent the night at a hotel in San Juan and got to explore and relax before leaving on our cruise the next day.

Cruises are awesome, and we are always looking at itineraries and trying to decide which one to book next. We've done Western, Eastern, and Southern Caribbean itineraries and the Southern was by far our favorite!

Don't over pack, you'll live in bathing suits and cover ups during the day and sundresses and cocktail dresses at night for dinner and the shows. Make sure you pack a nice cocktail dress or two for the formal nights and that your husband packs a suit or atleast some nice pants, shirt, and tie. You also don't need to bring towels as they'll provide you with both bath and pool/beach towels. Don't forget to bring extra money for tipping your room steward and waiters at the end of the cruise, they do an amazing job and live off tips.

Hummingbird125 how would we sneak our own liquor? Don't they check your bags? Our wedding is in July but we aren't leaving on the honeymoon until the 1st week of Sept. We are leaving from our home town so we don't have to worry about flights.

  • Each cruiseline is different. For example, Carnival allows you to bring on a 12 pack of soda while Royal Caribbean does not.  Cruse Critic is an amazing website that has very helpful people on it's boards to answer questions. The cruise ship website FAQs are also pretty decent.

My honeymoon cruise will be my second cruise. If you get even a little bit motion sick i'd bring dramamine. It was my savior on the first night of the cruise.  A lot of people hate to dress up for formal night dinners, but that was my fiance' and I's favorite part!! It was something different that we don't normally do.  Also, enjoy being pampered and taken care of. :)
