Dress Shopping. No Town Shop!

Looking for nice places with a big selection and great service in the area to go dress shopping.

Please do not recommend The Town Shop.  I will not take my business there.  They are unprofessional, overpriced and have no respect for the customers who keep them in business.

I also had a negative experience with them and heard that they are way overpriced and you can get the same dress for much cheaper elsewhere.

I even put off looking because I dont want to have another bad experience  :(

Honestly - wherever you go it is who you deal with as a consultant that can also make/break the experience. If you go anywhere get the recommendation of the consultant as well!

Meme's Bridal in Larchmont. The service is fantastic and the prices are very very fair. The consultant gave me 2 hours of her time even though I have a 1 hour appointment and she was not pushy or rude. I have been to 3 salon's and Meme's was where I got my dress.

I got my dress at The Bridal Cottage in Kingston. The consultant/owner Gladys is a little eccentric, but she was always very nice to me. I also shopped with my SIL at Reginella's before her 10/08 wedding, and they were lovely, though she didn't buy her dress there so we were only in there once.

Bella Couture in Newburgh. All of the ladies there were fabulous to me, my mom, and my bridesmaids.

I got my dress at the Town Shop and had nothing but a good experience.  There was even an issue with my dress (the wrong size) and they got one in with less than a month to go, altered it, etc.  I dont think my dress was overpriced but I also know it includes alterations.  It did not include the bustle.

I can see how my consultant may not have been the type of person that everyone would have gotten along with (example, my mother did NOT like her)...but she was fine as far as I was concerned.  I had also heard stories about the owner as well.  He was, at least to me, always nice and even carried my dress to my car after it was cleaned

I LOVED Ellie at Bride's Fantasy (right across Rt. 9 from the Town Shop), and Lady Gray in Beacon is awesome, too. Good luck!

I agree with you on town shop. But they do have a great selection. We went there and looked for BM dresses and ordered the dresses through Netbride. Saved so much money!

    Just a suggestion!

(I totally agree that Town Shop is over priced. I was very turned off by a tacked on alterations charge of $789! And it didn't include the bustle! The dress I like was a discontinued Mary's and they had it for $1299. (I asked if that was the sale price and they said it wasn't on sale. Well the P.C. Mary's website said it was. I looked around and I found out that Dress to Impress in the JV Mall could get me the same dress brand new for $510. Now that didn't include alterations, but still. I am sure I could find somewhere that could alter the dress for less than they were tacking on. Nearly $800 for alts? And it didn't include the bustle? That's crazy! If you were to ask them the dress was "$1299 and alterations were included" Except for the biustle. But since I knew what the dress alone cost, it was an awful lot rolled into the price to get them included.

True, that was just my experience with one dress. The other thing that bothered me is it seems they put people in the same dress. Seriously, I was told that I looked like a beautiful bride in the same dress that a bunch of other girls on this board have worn, And surprise, surprise, they got it at town shop. It's a pretty dress, but I didn't really like it on me. But the saleswoman kept pushing me to buy it. My mom liked it, I didn't. So we kept looking. But anyway...

Those are my feelings. But they do have a great selection. And carry complete lines of a lot of bridesmaid designers.

I have heard good things about Bella Couture in Newburgh.   I did not have a good experience at Bridal Fantasy ( I think that's the name). It's in the plaza across from Town Shop.  I truly could have passed out on the floor of the store and they would have walked over me.  I waited a half hour for someone to even acknowledge I walked in and then left.

I got my dress at Town Shop and had a great experience.  They immediately asked me my budget, only pulled dresses in my budge, had a great eye for what would look good on my body type  and at the time I bought (2008), alterations were included in the price of your gown. I don't know if that is still the case.  My dress fit like a glove.  All but my OOT bridesmaids got their dresses there so they got a discount since I bought my dress there.  They also have one of the biggest selections in the area.  However,   I agree the consultant can make or break it regardless if it's wedding dresses or cars or anything else you buy.

I too just purchased my dress at the Town Shop and had a great experience.  The cost of my alternations were included and although I will have to pay extra for a bustle (between $60 and $90), I expected that as it is fairly common.  I also found the prices to be very reasonable.

I also just had a great experience at Town Shop. I worked with Maria who was very sweet and funny. She helped me to find the perfect dress and even let me continue trying on dresses, just to be amuse me, even though I had found the ONE. Their selection is great and I think it is the ideal place to look for a dress if you're not 100% set on a certain dress. I like that they let you select from pictures and try on a variety of styles. So far, so good, but we'll see how alterations go!

I had a horrendous experience at Town Shop. The woman I worked with was overbearing and flat out rude. At one point she had dresses that I had asked her to pull for me put away when I hadn't tried them on yet. When my mother asked about them she matter of factly told my mom that her and I had talked about it and that I didn't want to try them on which was 100% fabricated. Once she went and re-pulled the dresses that she put away without my consent she went so far as to say to me something along the lines of: i thought you didn't like a straight top, Make up your mind. The woman told me to make up my mind. I asked her "Did you just tell me to make up my mind?" She then proceeded to back track and tried to talk her way out of it.

In addition, the place had about 4 brides trying on dresses at the same time and there were people everywhere. It was not an intimate or charming experience by any stretch of the imagination. I have been to at least 8 shops and this was by far the worst one. I too found the prices to be high even including alterations which is also misleading because the alterations that are included are only very minimal (to take the dress in or out). Bustles, cups, etc. are additional.

I would highly recommend the Bridal Cottage which is where I bought my dress if you would like a pleasant, personalized experience with a knowlegeable professional. Gladys owns the shop and does all of the alterations herself.

I also had excellent experiences at Charmoix in Rhinebeck and Reginella's in Montgomery. I left those shops wishing that I could have found my dress there because I WANTED to buy from them.

If you have gone into any bridal shop (other than a david's bridal) I think you will find that the Town Shop is definitely not over priced and they carry the best designers around!
