What does a Jack and Jill Shower mean in Columbus?

My BMs have been talking and asked me and my FI if we would like to have them throw us a co-ed shower. We are really excited about the idea especially since most of my friends are guys anyway. One of them called it a "Jack and Jill" shower. I thought the name was so cool... until I went and looked it up. Apparently in parts of the country, a Jack and Jill shower means selling admission tickets and raffle tickets for prizes in an effort to raise money for the wedding. While I am not the type of person to begrudge anyone else their own customs and whims, I don't want anyone associating that with us. What do we call co-ed showers in Columbus other than co-ed showers? Jack and Jill was such a cute name, but if they invite people from Indiana and Ohio, will they assume it is a BBQ in the backyard (which it is) or a fundraiser?

Anyone have a different cute name for a co-ed shower that the BMs could use instead? TIA

ps- for those of you who will use this question as a chance to lecture me that I am not supposed to have any part of planning my own shower, please keep it to yourself.  I am helping them come up with a clear invite as they asked me to. Refusing to help would have been stupid, especially since it would be my future family that might be getting the wrong message. Sorry for being defensive, but I have been looking over other posts for an answer to this and any bride who asks a question about a shower seems to get reamed. I fail to see how that is helping someone. I just want to know some local wedding terminology. Laughing

I had never heard of a "Jack & Jill" shower until The Knot boards, so I would not have been horribly offended had I been invited to one.

I had never heard of a jack and jill shower either. I have been to a shower for a couple before, and I'm 99% sure they just called it a "couples shower". I would suggest calling it that, and that way there shouldn't be any confusion with the purpose of the party! The couples shower I attended was fun. Good luck

Thanks for the advice! Picky question: was it a couple's shower or a couples shower? The BMs will ask me.

Congrats Buckeyesweetz on only a week to go! Good luck!

Ummm I don't remember. I just googled and there are some invites listed on weddingpaperdivas that say "couples shower" so that must be it. There was also an invite on there that said "join us for a wedding shower in honor of name and name". That could be another way to do it.

I've only ever heard of Jack and Jill showers being referred to as the kind where the couple is trying to get money.

However.  If you would like calling your shower a Jack and Jill shower I don't really see the problem in it.  I mean your invites I'm sure will be worded like a normal shower invite - there wouldn't be any talk of admission prices and/or things like raffles.  So I think it'd be pretty clear that your Jack and Jill means co-ed, and not money grubby.

At least I know if I received an invite that didn't talk about any admission prices I think I'd know immediately that it wasn't anything but a co-ed shower.

This. Although I've never heard of the term, as long as you don't charge admission (that's a little silly), I'm sure people wouldn't assume that. I think it's a brilliant idea, actually! I've only heard of coed baby showers...
