Pronunciation Question

So, I think this is the French influence on me but I'm wondering how other people say things. This is inspired by the flooding in Manitoba and cde's post on cars.

1. Kia Sportage

Do you say Sport - age, with a hard g or Spor - tage, with a soft g?

2. Portage, as in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba or Portaging a canoe

Do you say Port - age, with a hard g or Por - tage, with a soft g?

Kia Spor-tage and Por-tage la Prairie. I never even considered that people might say it otherwise. How do you say it, Hazel?

I've never heard of Portage, but in the first context, Por-tage.

Sportage with a hard g though.  I took 3 years of French before the German rendered me incapable of dealing with a Latin-based language.

I say it with a soft G. Too much French influence for me too.

Well, I say Spor-tage and Por-tage, but on the news this morning when they were talking about Portage la Prairie they weren't saying it the French way. Or maybe they were, but it sounded very harsh when he was saying portage.  So, it got me thinking. I didn't realize it could be said that way particularly when you connect with a canoe.

However, the mouse river out there, Souris River, has been anglicized so it doesn't sound French anymore (from what I understand).

There are others too, like Detroit, but that doesn't seem as bad to me.

Sport-ij for the first one Spor-taj for the second one. I took four years of french, a couple years of Spanish and my boyfriend tries to teach me German, so I'm all kinds of messed up.

Perfect way to write that, I was having a hard time describing it. I've always wondered how it is pronounced in Kia Sportage commercials in the US because it is Spor-taj in Canada.

    1. Kia Sportage- Kia Sport -idge or sometimes Sport-edge depending on how fast I say it

    2. Portage, as in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba or Portaging a canoe
Portage with a very soft g, in Portage la Praire.  But I've been studying French so I'm sure that has a large influence on my pronunciation.

    1. Ah ha- I found a Kia Spotage commercial!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWGvBiWrORU

It almost sounds like..."Sport Edge," which is how I would say it.

    2. And then I looked up portage at www.m-w.com- http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/portage

It also sounds like "port edge"

But I would have said, "Port-AH-ge"

Wait. I've always heard portage a canoe as port-edge. Is it por-TAHJ elsewhere?

    I'm so confused.

The whole sport-edge and port-edge thing is completely new to me and I think it sounds completely wrong when I hear it, particularly in regards to portage. Mind you this could be the French influence on me.

I pronounce the Kia like Sport-edge, because that's what they say in the commercial.

    I never say Portage.  =)
