First dance worries

I'm really worried about the bride/groom first dance because I absolutely cannot dance.  My fiance says he knows how to slow dance but he's never danced with me and I've never seen him.  I am very clumsy and have no rhythm and 2 left feet.  Can anyone recommend a good dance instructor in the Dearborn area?

We took a couple dance lessons and didn't find them all that worthwhile to be honest.  We definitely aren't the best dancers but we practiced a few times in the living room to our song.  Just learning to sway back and forth a little bit.

Plus it was kinda nice to take 5 minutes and just dance with DH during all the craziness leading up to the wedding.  It was quite relaxing actually :)
  • I don't have a recommendation, but stay away from Fred Astaire dance studio - total rip off. If you do get lessons, have them teach you a few moves that go with your song (ie - the box step and an underarm spin for the waltz or rumba) so that you feel comfortable dancing, but don't get stressed with trying to remember a full choreographed number. Dance to your song with FI a few times before the wedding and you'll feel a lot better :)
  • I know a lot of people have said they found dance lessons to be a waste of money.  DH and I are both terrible dancers, so we just practiced a few times in the living room to our song.

Most people I know don't have amazing first dances anyway.  I would focus more on the moment you two have together at the reception and less on trying to be good dancers.

  • We practiced but then I sorta freaked out day-of because wearing a dress and heels was different... after 10 seconds, I calmed down but I doubt many people cared/were watching.

[QUOTE]What I've recommended to students was you tube, believe it or not. There are simple box steps with directional dynamics that really make it look awesome. I'll PM them to you if you want!

  • Don't worry!!!! Simply putting your arms around each other and swaying is fine.  My dad has some major heart surgery and was out of the hospital a week before the wedding.  My FI and I decided that if my dad and I could only sway, we would only sway.  No one ever said anything to us about our first dance being boring, nor did anyone care.  So sway away and don't worry about doing anything complicated :)

  • My husband and I took lessons from a woman in Livonia and loved it! We took 8 or so private lessons for $50/hour. PM me if you would like her contact information.
