Need advice on depositing a check.

FI's grandmother sent us a check the other day.  We've called her with our thanks as well as sent a TY card and would like to deposit the check.  We are hoping to put it into savings for now.  I have a savings account but FI doesn't (he is still a student) so we agreed that all wedding $$ will be put into my savings for now.  However, grandma's check was only made out to FI.  Does that mean that he needs to deposit the check into his account and then write a check to me for the same amount?  Is there an easier way to do this?  We don't want to set up joint checking/savings until he is done with school next year.  Thanks!

He should be able to deposit it into your account after endorsing it (signing the back), but he'll have to be there with you in person to do it since it's in his name. If coordinating your schedules is a problem during bank hours, he could also go to the bank by himself with your account number and name.

He could also cash the check, give you the money then you can deposit the cash into your savings account.

  • My FI is a CPA so he answered this one:

Have your FI endorse the check on the back.  Once it is signed, you can deposit in whatever account you want. Just don't lose it once it is signed, because at that point ANYONE can deposit it.  That's why you shouldn't endorse any checks until you are ready to deposit.
