Airfare to Europe

Hey everyone!  I've been looking at flights to Europe and I'm getting so disappointed!

We are looking to fly from Detroit, MI to PAR 11/12/2012 and then from ROM back to DTW on 11/25/2012.  The flights have been consistently in the $1200 range and the other morning they suddenly dropped to $945!  I went home to book them that night and the price had gone back up :(

Does anyone know any "secret" sites (haha) for less expensive airfare?  I've been using Kayak to compare but I'm not really savvy on other budget sites to Europe.

    The best advice I have is when you see a price you can live with, BOOK. Don't hesitate or even leave the website. The price can jump back up immediately.

    Clear your cookies, when you go back and look at the same flight over and over on the same computer the flight will go up.  

    Check on Tues. and Wed nights.  

    Book when you see a great price.

    We went to Europe in March and I started watching prices in Nov.  The moment I saw it had dropped to $899 I booked it and the next day it went back up in the $1000's; best of luck!

    adjust your return date too. you're flying home the sunday of thanksgiving weekend-the busiest and one of the MOST expensive times to fly.

    Having flown to & from Europe several times, I will say that I don't care for Kayak as a website. They're never the cheapest. Neither is Expedia.

    If either of you is a student, check out studentuniverse.com.  If student or under 26, try STAtravel.com

    Other than that, hotwire or cheapflights.com seem to have the lowest when I look.

    Try flying between tues-thurs if you can. Holiday weekends are mroe expensive, as PP mentioned. If you can, use the flexible days option to see cheapest airfares.

    Also, a tip for hotels! My BIL moved here from UK years ago, and his sister lives at north coast of Scotland. One time when they were on the phone planning her family's next trip out, they were both on the same website looking at the same hotel, and her listed price was significantly higher than his. The best they figure is the price goes up if your IP address shows you far away.  She called to make the reservation instead, and got the rate that he had been shown.  So find hotels you like, then CALL and find out their pricing, don't book online :)

    Oh, and also it's cheaper to fly in and out of the same airport than go from two different ones. If you go from the same one, you get roundtrip prices, whereas from two different airports, you have to by two one-way tickets, which can up the price 1.5x or sometimes more.  So I'd recommend flying from Rome back to Paris, rather than Rome directly home.

    Within Europe, you can also use bargain airfare like RyanAir or EasyJet, but be aware you're only allowed one carry-on (which RyanAir has weight limits on) and would have to pay for checked luggage. Don't know typical cost, never paid the extra.

    This isn't ness. true.  We just flew with United in March & April and it was only $80 more per person to fly into Amsterdam and out of London.  We opted to pay the $160 extra rather than book another flight/train back to Amsterdam for a complete r/t flight.  It saved us money and time.  It's called a multi-city flight.  Not all search engines offer this example, but most do.

    It sends you a lot of emails but gives me daily updates on sales for where I am going.
