Quick hamburger question

So H was responsible for taking out the meat yesterday to thaw for the grill-out today. Clearly he forgot to take out hamburger (even though he remembered the hot dogs?)

Anyway. How can I quick-thaw it? If I can't do it safely, I'll either run to the grocery store or just tell people we only have hot dogs and brats. ;)

Re: Quick hamburger question

  • Personally I'd make sure it's sealed in a  baggie or something and then submerge it in bowl with a trickle of cool running water.

  • It is in a Ziploc bag, so I think I'll just do that. :)

We thaw everything with submerging it in a bag in warm/hot water. We've never gotten sick, its safe. The water doesnt stay hot for very long because the food is frozen and it ends up being luke warm.
  • Yeah. I'm not too worried about the safety part, since they'll be going on a fire-hot grill ;) But I wanted to make sure I didn't screw up the taste/texture of the beef either.

Oh- in my Googling, it says it's actually quicker/more effective to use cool water, not hot?

I think its pretty quick either way, but I doubt it matters.
  • I've noticed that the hot water just gets cold really fast anyway so maybe it just becomes less effective to do it that way?

    <div>Yeah. Mine's all thawed already :)</div><div>
</div><div>I thought that was interesting about cool water working better though. I wonder why. (But I'm too lazy to Google more now.)</div>

I like to think the short period of extra heat in the water helps speed things up. I thaw shrimp in cold water though lol
