Ring resizing

I don't know if this is the best place to post-- if it's not, can someone please redirect me?

My fiance bought my ring online, from a place that has no local storefronts. I need to get it sized down, maybe as much as a full size.  Can anyone tell me how much it costs to get it resized at a place other than your store of purchase?  And how long it takes, and really anything else that's worth mentioning?

I really need to get it done. The thing is slipping all over my finger. I just don't want to have to spend like $50 and wait a month or something. And Yahoo Answers sucks for getting this answer, by the way.

Re: Ring resizing

  • Is what's in your picture in your sig what you have?  Generally eternity band or channel-set rings that have the diamonds going more than half way around can be very difficult, impossible or quite expensive to re-size.  If not, probably not more than $250 to size it down at a local jeweler.  If that is your ring, well get a quote but most jewelers may not want to do it, or they're going to charge you a LOT to do it since it can often involve having to reset a bunch of the stones when they re-shape it.  Hhow recently did you get engaged?  Many online places will have a 30 day exchange policy.  Even if they don't, it would be worth talking to the place he got it from, they may be willing to exchange it for a small fee that would be less than what you'd have to pay.

  • Hmm, didn't know that.  The stones don't go all the way around, there's a bit of bare gold on the bottom.  Not sure how much they look for.

The ring was purchased more than 30 days ago, which seems to be the company's limitation.  But I suppose it's worth calling them to see if we can exchange it for the size down. Thanks for that advice. I really don't want to throw $200 around to take a millimeter of gold out of my ring.

  • You may want to make sure they can size that much lower.  Everywhere I've been, when it comes to a ring with stones going down the band, they don't size far before they need to be custom ordered for size. I was told if my ring had been one with more stones I would have had to get a different one, or let them size it down until they made a flat part on the band.

  • You only need a millimeter removed? I wouldn't worry with it, then. Once you have a wedding band to wear with it, it will feel tighter and you'll want that millimeter back. For now, you could always get one of those little rubber ring adjusters from Claire's to take up a little bit of space and keep it from annoying you. It's a temporary fix, but it'll keep you from blowing a ton of money on something unnecessary.
  • I have heard that a jeweler can build up the band on the inside instead of actually removing metal. I have heard that what they do is put two little beads of metal (the same as what the band is made of) on the inside of the band as to help make the ring smaller without have to actually remove metal from the band. I have no had this done but I would assume that it is much easier, faster and cheaper to do than a traditional resizing. I would ask a jeweler about this option.

I took it to an independent jeweler yesterday, he said it's no problem and charged me $40.  They did end up adding a bit of gold to the inside of the bottom of the band, which might take a bit of getting used to, but it's good enough for me I guess. Thanks for all the feedback, everyone!
