Name Change Process...

So, I went looking today for information on how to change my name after we get married (I heard that you can fill out the papers before so it makes it one stop shop after the wedding). WELL, I am now utterly confused...everytime I go to my state's court website it gives me all this information and then it says "Please do not file these if you are changing your name because you got married"....well then where do I get the ones for my marriage. Stupid, I am sure I will post this on the Arizona board because we all have different requirements but I just wanted to vent a little. Has anyone seen the "kits" they have...I am tempted to do that and make it easier but I don't know if I can!! Anyone had experience or know someone who has used one of those!?

Re: Name Change Process...

  • The kits go on sale a lot from wedding websites. I keep contemplating, it does make it a bit easier. That's weird though, about your forms. Good luck figuring out what you are supposed to fill out. I can imagine how annoying that must be!
  • Thanks! I will have to keep an eye out and see if they go on sale! Knowing me it might just be easier to get one...I am kind of a newb when it comes to finding anything remotely hard ha.

  • I was reading on a different board ...I cant remember which one but they said that those name change things are a joke!  I thought it was only a couple of places that you have to go to get the paper work ... and you may even be able to get the paper work online.

Now you got me thinking about seeing what exactly i have to do to change my name :)  You're always ahead of the game!

  • Don't buy a kit!! It is super easy.

You do not have to file anything with the court other than your Marriage License - once your officiant completes it they usually send it to be recorded at the clerk's office.

Once you get that back you can take it to the Social Security Office to get your new SS card, and I think you can  now get something from the Social security office stating that you have requeted the new card and then take that and your recorded marriage license to the DMV to do your driver's license and registration.  Same with any banks, etc. All you need is your recorded marriage license.
  • Yes, don't buy a kit, it's ridiculously easy and I have no idea they make it seem so complicated!

I did this in California so things may be a bit different in Arizona so I would ask your board before you head out but I...

-Took my marriage license to the social security office (I went mid-day on a weekday and only had a 15 minute wait!).  When I got there I told the clerk that I had just been married and I needed to change my last name.  The form was small and easy to fill out, which I did while I waited.

-The Social Security office gave me a form saying that I had applied for a new card with my new name change, which I immediately took to the DMV (again, mid-day during the week, little wait).  I gave the DMV the form that the SS office gave me and my marriage license and they took my pic and said I'd have my new driver's license in a few weeks, and in the meantime they also gave me a little paper to use until then.

-I then went to my bank with the form from the DMV and the form from the SS office, and changed my name on my bank accounts.

I did all of this in the same day and took about 3 hours total and I was done!

MIOST places require that you go to the Social Security office first, then you can go to the DMV.  But someone once told me that they went to the DMV first.  This doesn't make much sense to me since the name change doesn't take place until you apply for a new Social Security card, but that's the way it worked for them in MN.

Anyway, I wouldn't even bother printing the paper work before you go to these offices.  In both cases (DMV and SS office) they had the paperwork readily available for me and all I had to do was ask... and it gave me something to do while I waited (and the forms were short so if there was no wait I could fill it out while the clerk entered the info from my marriage license).

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

  • OMG Thank you! That definitely does NOT seem as complicated as they make it sound. I will stop worrying now and just wait until I can bring my marriage certificate in to SS. Thank you!!
