Of course, a drama-free wedding planning experience was too much to hope for. How could I have been so stupid?
Getting my invitations finished and in the mail has turned into a nightmare. I bought a DIY kit and foolishly accepted my stepmother's offer to print the invitations, response cards and envelopes for me, because she has the right kind of printer and she's done invitations on it before.
Tomorrow is two months to my wedding date and my invitations are STILL nowhere near ready to be mailed, despite the fact that she and my dad have known for WEEKS that I wanted them out by the two-month mark at the latest. THREE TIMES I have tried to arrange to go out to their house for the day to answer any last-minute questions about addresses +1s, etc. and stuff all the envelopes so we can finally mail these stupid things. The first time, the invitations just weren't ready and we decided to wait. But twice now I've been shot down because something else on their end has come up.
I was supposed to go today. At this point, all the invitations and enclosures and about 95% of the envelopes are printed. I wanted to go through them to make sure everyone who should be getting an invitation has one, fill in the proper number of allotted seats on the response cards, number them and cross-reference with my guest list spreadsheet so that I can keep track of who has RSVPed and thereby stand a chance of maintaining what's left of my sanity between now and the wedding. Between that and stuffing the envelopes, I figured we'd need a decent amount of time. I called my dad yesterday and asked what time I should come out.
He said that he and my stepmom wouldn't be available until 4pm, PLUS they didn't get the invitations weighed at the post office or get stamps yet, and I just about blew a gasket.
I live 90 minutes away from my dad and stepmom's house. I can't go out there at 4pm, do everything that needs to be done to get the invitations in the mail tomorrow, and get back home at a reasonable time so that I can be ready for work tomorrow. I talked with FI and we came up with a plan that if we could just GET the invitations earlier in the day today, we could just finish them ourselves and get postage at the one post office around here that mercifully has Sunday hours. His parents even offered to help stuff the envelopes. Good plan, right?
Well, now I've been trying to get my dad on the phone all morning and he's not picking up.
I am about ready to give up, cancel everything, get as much of my money back as I can and run off with FI to Vegas or something because this is BULL.
Lesson learned. You can't ever delegate anything important about your planning, apparently, because people just can't be trusted.
