When to get the dress

Hey my ladies that are sharing my wedding date of Sept 22!

Ok I have a wedding dress question. Am I the only one that does not have their dress yet. I know which dress I want. I have tried it on and looked at it 100 times but I am trying to lose my weight first and then buy it to avoid alterations because right now the size 6 fits great but I would love to get the size 4 instead. I tried on the 4 too but I need to lose about 10 pounds to feel good in it. Is it ok to wait a month or so on the dress. I am still ok to get it in time for the wedding right? Need some help and advice! Thank you ladies. I am just trying to look the best I can for my wedidng and I have been wanting to lose 10 pounds so what better time to do it.

Re: When to get the dress

  • Ask wherever you will be ordering the dress from what the last possible date to order is. You do run the risk of having that dress discontinued to, keep in mind.

If you are set on trying to lose weight, I would give yourslef a firm deadline that you will order by (based on the bridal shop's recommendation) and stick to it. Also make sure you're not looking to loose something unreasonable that you won't be able to maintain from when you order the dress to your wedding day.

I personally would get the 6 and the worst thing that happens is they have to take it in a bit. You don't want to get a smaller size and think all day that you wish you lost 3 more lbs because you would be more comfortable.

Also, dress sizes run very different, so focus on the measurements, not the size. FIgure out what the measurements are for the 4 and see if it is realistic for you to lose whatever inchage you need to lose.

PS. I'm pretty sure inchage isn't a word.

    Hope this helps!
  • I'm a Sept 29 and I don't have my dress yet. I don't have it because I don't like any of the gowns at the store here, and I'm waiting until I go to CA. Like PP said, don't focus on the size. 10 pounds is a lot to lose, and unless you're losing properly, it's not going to come off in a snap. If it does, you're likely not doing it in a healthy way and it will quickly come back, and then some.

    I'd probably kill to be a 6. :/

don't worry so much about the size. they will alter it down to fit you. i probably could have ordered a size 4, but one of my measurements was .5" larger than the size 4, so the consultant helping me told me to just order the 6 and have it taken in. you will be having alterations done anyway, so the size really doesn't matter. they will alter it to fit you and take it in where necessary. it's much easier to take it in than to let it out.

I, too, was set on losing weight before ordering it. It just didn't happen. i'd rather have my dress on time and have time for proper alterations than being able to say i ordered one size smaller. no one is going to ask you that. (or they shouldn't!)

FWIW, I usually wear clothes size 0-2, so seeing the number 6 was really scary to me.

edit: another thought is that you can't really control where you lose weight from. losing ten pounds might be great but if you don't loose enough inches from a specific area, the 4 may still not fit.

i hate to be a downer, my only point is that i think you should order your dress asap.
    Happily married since 9/1/2012!

  • Lauraps, I'd order your dress as soon as you can. I was fortunate enough to fall in love with a dress at Alfred Angelo they were selling off the rack, but dresses take a LONG time & paying rush fees would be a budget bummer.

As for the sizing, order the 6. It's so much easier to have a dress taken in then let out during alterations. And as kellycatlo said, depending on where you lose weight and inches from, you may have fitting issues if you order the 4.

    GL to you!

  • I agree with PP, "wedding dress world", as the dress store owner called it, has very different sizes, even the designers vary and they are usually WAY off from street sizes, go by measurements not by size. When I was measured My boobs, waist and hips fit in 3 different dress sizes on the chart, so, even if I was to lose some weight, I doubt I would be in a smaller dress size, now I'm doing it just to look better in the size I ordered.
  • Talk to your dress store and see how long the specific brand you like takes to come in. My dress took about 4 months.

FWIW, I wanted to wait and lose weight too, but I set myself a limit like, "Ok, I'm going to try and diet until X date and then I'm going to buy the dress and just have it altered." I'm glad I did because now I don't have to worry.

I know you want to save on alterations, but a rush fee might be just as expensive. Also, my bust is the largest part of me and my measurement for my hip, waist, and bust were for three different sizes so I was going to need alterations regardless of what weight I lost. I had to order a size 12 to accomidate my breasts!

I think you should order now.

  • Thank you ladies! I am planning on ordering the dress by the end of this month. I am going to try and diet a few more days and lose maybe 1-2 pounds and be happy and order the dress. I know my man will love the way I look no matter what. Thank you all your the advice! And congrats to everyone!
  • Why wait til the end of the month? My appt is on March 10 and the store told me I was at the 6 month mark and really pushing it. I may have to pay extra for a "rush" delivery. Just order it now, and work on yourself after.

  • I haven't ordered mine either.
  • That's my date, I ordered my dress a month ago and it will be in in June. It takes 6 months for the dress to come in (some places say 8 months). If you order this month you should have it by August giving you about a month for alterations.

  • I bought off the rack, my budget didn't allow for many choices. I bought what dress size fit me then, and if I lose weight then fantastic, they'll have to take it in some... if not, I will still have a dress that fits.

I did the opposite for a bm dress a couple years ago. Bought the smaller size because I was "working out" and I didn't lose enough so I had to squeeze in and not breathe throughout the whole day... then had to unzip the dress down to my butt and wear FI's jacket the whole night... NOT FUN!

Oh, I got mine a month ago, but it was actually my first time shopping and I hate dresses so I wanted to get it over with... if that wasn't the case and I liked trying on clothes, then I would probably still be looking.
  • You can always order a size 4 and continue to work on your fitness goals, can't you? There's no law that says you must perfectly fit the size you order. I ordered a bm dress for my best friend's wedding a size smaller than what I fit in on the day that we ordered because I knew that my plans would allow for it, and it worked out very well. I'd either order the 6 that you fit in now and plan to have it taken in or if you're SURE you'll be able to pull it off, get the 4, but do it ASAP. If you don't buy off the rack, you're cutting it pretty close. Get whatever makes you happy and work to make it fit. Good luck!

  • Well I called the company after some of yall were saying the dress took a long time depending on the place and right now they said the one I want is 6 weeks out. We are having some budget issues so that is why I am waiting some too because although this dress is under $1,000 it is still a little over my budget for the dress but at the same time I love it and have not found anything else I wanted. So I am waiting a few more weeks to see about money! I really want this dress and talking with the lady at the place I should be ok waiting. Thank you all for the advice and sweet words. Congrats to all you ladies! yay for weddings! :)
