tipping

It looks like the only person we have to technically (?) tip is our DJ since he is the only one that does not own their own business.

So, how much of a tip is appropriate? Is is a flat percentage? Based on the # of hours? Based on the overall amount?

Thanks! :)

Re: tipping

  • OMG I didn't even think about this! Do you have to tip anyone else you hire? Yikes!
  • I tipped 15-20% with the exception that no one will get over $150.

  • 20% is a safe bet, but like PP said I would put a cap on the max tip you're willing to give.

Also, a tip IS based on service, so you should wait till the end of the evening to tip and if they've done a poor job you can reduce the tip or not provide one at all.

  • I like the answer about a percentage, up to a maximum. I don't think we tipped anyone over $100 for any of the services (but my Mom took care of this as she used to be in catering and wanted to cover it for us).
  • ok thank you! if we tipped 20%, he'd be getting almost $200. We thought possibly in the $60-70 range, but then a couple friends said around $100 too.

    It just keeps adding up........

  • This continues to confuse me.  I know that the 15-20% range applies to restaurant servers because they only make like $2.50 an hour since their industry is exempt from federal minimum wage laws and they truly live off their tips.  Plus 20% of a $30 meal is a whole lot less than 20% of a $1,000 photographer.  So I guess I don't see why vendors who make a whole lot more than $2.50/hr.  should be entitiled to such a high percentage.  It makes more sense to me to do the flat rate of $100 as a "job well done" gesture.  But maybe someone else can shed some insight that I'm just not getting here.
