Vegan Hor d'oeuvres Question

We will have several vegatarians and one vegan at our wedding. We are already making plans with the chef to design a vegan dinner for them.

I am worried about cocktail hour now though. We get 4 options. I know I need to make sure at least one of them is vegan. Do you think it would be understandable to only offer one choice since they will be the minority or should I pick 2 options, knowing all the guests will eat veggie style apps?

I would do two veggie apps and see if the vendor will let you upgrade the meat on one of the other apps, no charge, since two of your four will be vegan. If I remember, I think your vendor has the "upgraded" apps that maybe you can do for one of the four (like the raw oysters, yum).

I'd either have two veggie apps or have one veggie app and a veggie display.

Most cocktails are naturally vegan/vegetarian anyway (with exception to say-a sex on the beach), so I wouldn't worry about having something that would work for them. They can have a martini along with the rest of you :-)

I think she meant the hors d' oeuvres, not the cocktails. What's in a sex on the beach that doesn't make it vegan? I thought it was just peach schnapps, vodka, cranberry and orange juice.

Half and half is in a sex on the beach :-)

Edit: I totally read the question wrong :-P It's pretty easy to make vegan/vegetarian hors d'oeuvres.

I might do 2, because like you said, everyone else will eat them as well.

    Some ideas:

    - falafel in pita w/ tahini and vegetables
    - hummus or babaganoush with pita chips
    - chips and various salsas
    - fried vegetable croquettes w/ vegan pesto
    - fresh fruit and vegetable tray
    - regular or sweet potato fries with various dipping sauces (chipotle ketchup, maple BBQ sauce, etc)

MMmm MsMery everything you named sounds incredible to me! I may need to contact my venue and see if they would be able to do Falafel! I forgot all about it. Thanks ;-)

Just out of curiousity, what's not vegan about Kahlua?

It's made with milk. Just a bit - like nutella.

I'd do one vegan and one vegetarian (ie., no meat but still has butter, egg, cheese, etc).

I think that choosing half of your appetizer options to accommodate 1 guest (who--unless it's for religious reasons--made a lifestyle choice) is a little extreme.

Actually, Kahlua is vegan. It's the premade Kahlua drinks that aren't.

Also, I've never seen/had a Sex on the Beach that's had half and half in it.

eta: I'd definitely do 2 veg. hor d'oeuvres since everyone can eat them.

Thanks ladies! I think we are going to half and half. It will be about 6 people who are veg/vegan and everyone likes veggies so I think it'll be good.

Having vegetarian hor d'oeuvres would be a good call.  Might be difficult to get something vegan however.  I have a friend who is vegan and she says that she never expects that apps are vegan or that dessert is vegan as long as she has a meal she can eat at the wedding!

It's really nice of you to go out of your way to arrange this :)

I am a vegetarian, and don't really mind if there is not much hor d'oeuvres that are vegetarian. I know that I made a choice to be veg and that most people are not veg. I would definitely be fine with just 1 choice (or even no veg option) of vegan hor d'oeuvres.

msmerymac those all sound like delicious options that everyone would be able to eat whether veg or not!  i think as long as you don't stress like "these are the vegan options" and just have them available to everyone they will go quickly!  sounds great!

I have been a vegan for 22 years. As long as there is something for me at dinner I am fine. I never expect apps or desert. I am excited when someone thinks to ask for fruit for me since the cake isn't vegan ( mine will be since I am paying getting it made by a high end vegan baker and taken on a plane by my friend). But also is you have veg app plate that could help. But really if they have a vegan dinner they will be fine.
