Wedding Woes

This is not an original complaint

It really cheeses me off when retailers use the whole "boys' toys" vs. "girls' toys" categorization.  I never liked it, but now I really, really dislike it.

S/O Cars, from PMeg's advent/countdown calendar post, the Woozle loves Cars.  She plays with them in a more stereotypically girl way, more like characters in her imaginary stories than racing around crashing into things.  But still, she loves Cars.  She actually woke up this morning clutching her little die cast Lightning McQueen, mumbling "Chick and the King," and when she became more awake she sat up and, disoriented, asked "Where are the Chick Hicks and the King I was playing with downstairs?"  Which she hadn't been and doesn't even own, she was literally dreaming of Cars.  So I went to see if I could specifically find a Chick and a King somewhere, since Cars 2 stuff is disappearing and stuff from the first Cars is even scarcer.

Toys R Us has some original Cars, and of course you have to click on Boys' Toys to find them and it made me all kinds of irritated.  Such a narrow definition.  As I said, it's not a new or original complaint, but I feel like people are so pigeonholed and categorized as it is, do we really have to start before kindergarten?

I also saw the "boys' toys" on TRU.com this week and was hella pissed. I was looking for Legos. (<-- another not-new rant right there.)

    Amazon is doing it, too.

Anyway, fwiw, Des also does the "cars as dolls" thing. He is all about monster trucks lately, and his monster trucks have whole elaborate conversations with other about what their names are and what they're doing, where they're going, etc. It. Is. HILARIOUS. And freaking adorable, of course.  Usually at some point during the conversation, they crash into each other or drive over matchbox cars or whatever, but they are the chattiest bunch of monster trucks I've ever seen.

  • I'm with you on all that hate.
  • You know I'm right there with you.

Check out TowardTheStars - it won't be branded stuff, but they have non-gender-segregated toys. I think either PrincessFreeZone or PigtailPalsBallcapBuddies have toy/vendor guides, as well.

And you can find all of those companies on Facebook, too. Give 'em some love.

I also like FatBrain Toys. They segregate by age group and toy type - so you can search for "dolls" or "blocks", not "boy" or "girl" toys.

  • There was a woman at work who said, "Of course you should find out the sex of your baby [note: not to me, just in my group of people].  How do you know if you are going to buy blue or pink stuff!?"

I said something about how nice red, orange, yellow, green, and purple could be too (yes, I received RoyGBiv in my head for that).  The stank eye was apalling.

  • I really hate it most at fast food places. We rarely order actual kids' meals when we do fast food, but man, I just want to reach through that drive-through speaker and strangle someone when they ask if we want girl or boy toys. I mean, come on.

YES!  I always ask for the boy toy for DD, but it trips DH up and he says girl everytime.  The boy toys are always much more fun!

The gender thing also comes into play when you're searching for kid sheet set.   DD just got a new twin size bed, and she specifically asked for princess sheets.   Fine - grandma got them for h er, but I thought we could do a generic comforter so she can swtich out the sheets as interests change.  It is so hard to search for a comforter that is (A) not licensed characters and (B) not completely girl or completely boy.   Urgh.
  • AF, we had that problem even w/ baby bedding.
And 1/2 the people who saw nursery pics said things along th elines of "so, obviously a boy, right?"
Dude-there's blue in the room, but, FFS.
  • AF- we went for a white comforter for that reason.

Well - the whole point is moot now because her great aunt and uncle bought her a princess comforter.   Oh well.

  • I will never own a white comforter again, even for the adults in my house. *maybe* on a guest bed. Maybe.

We are considering getting "real" bedding for them. They still just have the fitted sheet and a blanket on a twin mattress, like a giant crib without railing. It works well, and I figure a whole sheet/blanket thing will just be a bigger mess.

But yes, I'm not really looking forward to the search. I suspect we'll end up with a licensed character. :(

Then again, I'm much more ok with boys having "boy" things than girls having "girl" things. I guess because "boy" things don't send the not-too-subtle signal that the kid should strive to be less than or dependent on someone else.

Company Kids has a lot of good solids and neutral-ish prints for kids' bedding.  I was seriously eyeing some of the stars linens for DD.
