Travel Time Question?

How far is too far to ask guests to travel between ceremony and reception? I am looking into having my ceremony in my hometown and my reception in a nearby city. (About a 30 min drive) Is 30 min too far?

Re: Travel Time Question?

  • Aww man! Reading comprehension fail - I read Time Travel question.

Anyway, per other posts here, 30 mins is like the max that you should ask guests to travel between ceremony and reception.

Describe the 30 minutes. Is it like the time google maps says? or is it the amount of time it takes to drive that distance during the time of day on that day of the week?

If I drive to the store I work for at 6:15am on a Saturday morning I can make it in 8-10 minutes. That same drive on a Monday at 5:10pm? 20-25.

If your wedding is a Saturday evening, do the drive around the same time on a Saturday evening. If it's more like 45 minutes, I'd start looking at having your ceremony and reception closer together.

  • I agree with PP.  I think 30 minutes is max, and if there is a venue closer, you should reconsider the 30 minutes.  If there are no other choices between the ceremony & reception, guests may be a little forgiving about the distance. But, if you are in a city with a lot of choices that they have to drive past to get to your reception venue, people wil be fussy.

Also, in my experience, unless you are in a rural area where that type of travel is normal, when there is more than a 10-15 minute drive between venues, some guests tend to choose to attend either the ceremony or the reception.
