Maui & Kuaui

Hi -

We're going to the islands of Hawaii for our honeymoon.  Started pouring through our travel book but if you have any must-see, must-do, must-go recommendations, I would love to hear them!

Re: Maui & Kuaui

  • Reviews in my bio
  • I have stuff for Maui in my married bio too, but a few of my favourites are the Olivine Pools (if the surf isn't up), the Waihe'e Ridge Trail, camping in Haleakala's crater (I swear, the people who drive up for sunrise/sunset miss the best part about the Hawaiian night sky: the stars. Hawaii gets 80% of both the North and South Hemisphere's stars - they're incredible), eating at Roy's!
  • Bike down Mount Haleakala(sp??) on Maui!!! It is one of the coolest things i have ever done and it is all downhill so you don't have to be a super athlete to do it!
  • (Maui) Road to Hana, sushi at Sensai in Kapalua.  Reviews/pics in my bio.
  • Going to Kaui this week, will respond more after I get back!
  • Oh Kaui is amazing!  It is not touristy at all, very natural and laid back!  This is what I emailed to a friend who recently went...there's many more restaurants and things, but we hung like locals because we had family living there.

    RESTAURANTS
Olympic Cafe  -  1354 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaa (808) 822-5825 (Breakfast!)
    Ohno's Cafe  -  4-1292 Kuhio Highway, Kapaa (808) 822-1710 (Breakfast!)
    Duke's Restaurant & Bar - 3610 Rice Street, Lihue (808) 246-9599 (Part of Mariott)
    SNORKELING
    Snorkel Bob's  -  4-734 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaa (808) 823-9433 (For gear)
    Anini Beach
    Poipu Beach
    Ha'ena Beach State Park
    ATTRACTIONS
    Kilauea Lighthouse
      -  Kilauea Road, Kilauea, North Kauai (808) 828-1413
Glass Sand Beach  -  To get there, you take the Port Allen exit off the highway, then turn down a street past some warehouses, then follow a very rutted dirt road to the water. (Kind of a secret spot - tons of tumbled glass from the ocean that washes up here only)
Find a place to get Shave Ice!!!!
Kilohana Plantation - 3-2087 Kaumualii Highway, Lihue (808) 245-5608 (All three of the following places are located here.)
Gaylord's Restaurant & Luau - GREAT Luau and show
Kauai Plantation Railway - Great ride and tour
Koloa Rum Co. - Really neat plant plus t-shirts, gifts, coasters, etc
Secret Beach - Kaupea Beach  You take a 5 mile BUMPY road to get to it, but it is private and awesome!  "10 min. 4 miles plus 10 min walk ----- Head east [left] out of Princeville on highway 56.  Take the 2nd instance of Kalihiwai road [after climbing out of the big canyon made by Kalihiwai River] at mile post 24.  Turn north [left] on Kalihiwai road and then take a quick [about .1 mile] right  onto a dirt road.  Follow the dirt road .5 mile to a small parking lot at the end.   Park in the lot or along the dirt road using care to remove all valuables from your car.  The trailhead is at the north west corner of the parking lot.   Follow the trail for about 7 minutes as it descends 180 feet and traverses 1/3 mile  [about 500 steps] to the beach.   Enjoy the varied plant life along the way."
  • I second biking down Haleakala in Maui!  I hadn't been on a bike in 10 years, but handled myself just fine.  You basically just coast down (very little peddling) and enjoy the spectacular views.  We took a shuttle up at sunrise and biked down after.  While the sunrise was amazing (and the stars we saw WERE incredible), if we were to do it again, we'd just go during the day.  Our schedule was thrown off as it was with jet lag, but getting up at 2 am really messed up the rest of the day/night!

Depending on which part of Mauai you're staying (we were in Kanapaali), go to the Old Lahaina Luai in Lahaina.  We booked a luau just because we felt like we had to (we were in Hawaii, after all..!) but ended up having a great time.

If you're in Kanapaali, hang out in Lahaina (about a 5-10 minute drive up the road), lots of fun restuarants/bars/shops right on the water.  You can also walk up to Whalers Village from many of the Kanapaali resorts, which is another great outdoor shopping mall/restaurant area on the water.  Both Whalers Village and Lahaina are great places to have dinner and watch the sunset every evening.

We also did a zipline tour, which was a lot of fun!  Check out the Eco-Adventure Skyline Adventure.  Our tour guides were so much fun, and with a 9 am start, we were back to the hotel by lunch.

We did not do the Road to Hana, but will if we ever go back.  I hear it's great, but is an entire day of driving.

In Kauai we did an open-air helicopter tour.  Absolutely incredible!  It was a great way to see all the different geography of that beautiful island (deserts, canyons, jungles, mountains, waterfalls, etc.) that you'd never be able to see by car.  Other than that, we lounged around our amazing hotel (Grand Hyatt in Poipu) and enjoyed the amazing pools and restaurants.  Kauai is definitely the place to relax, while Maui has SO much going on.  Both are great, have fun!!!
