Patriotic Wedding Theme?

Ok new here but since I dont want to bore my single friends with wedding bullcrap I'll post some questions here.
I am marrying my Marine next year when he returns from deployment. We haven't nailed down a date yet but we are thinking July. Anyways we've discussed what we would like our wedding to be like and he suggested a patriotic theme. He was kind of half joking/serious... but after thinking about it I thought "why the hell not?" I mean, i could pick some other pretty colors or themes, but we both love our country and I couldnt be prouder of his service so why not a patriotic theme? So I guess my question is... How do i keep it from being cheesy a la the American Flag wedding dress that I'm sure you have seen floating around these internets? I want it to be a sort of "classy Americana" themed wedding... but I'm not really sure what I could do to convey that? Any ideas and/or suggestions from your own military weddings?

Hey :] I am marrying a marine too. There are some awesome sites on Facebook that can prob. help you out with that more ! I have one... search USMC Gals :] Anyways. I think that if you make like your flowers and centerpieces red and blue and keep the BM dresses the classic red with the blues... Maybe get a patriotic cake or just a white one with an awesome topper [[links on my fb page]]

I'm not military but saw this post.  We are getting married in Philadelphia and because it is going to be a destination wedding for almost all of our guests I decided to try for a 1776 Americana theme.   It's really tough to pull it off without it looking like a political party nominating convention.

I stumbled on a theme of stars.  Use glittery star cutouts overlapped lining one side of the aisle.  Have place cards in the shape of stars.  Top your cake with two glittery blue stars with your names on them and use red roses to decorate it.  The Grooms cake can be anything - the liberty bell, an American flag, etc. Hang stars from the backs of chairs.  Find star shaped confetti to throw instead of rice.  Give the flower girl a magic wand with a star on the end to carry down the aisle.

Instead of a unity candle, do a water ceremony with red and blue water (we're adding floating candles to this).  Find a wax seal with a star (or another american theme - I used the quill and ink one) to close your inside envelopes - I highly recommend letterseals.com for their seals and their faux wax. (if you decide to do the seal, be sure to toss it in a glass filled with ice to cool it down between stamps).

You might find star invitations that you like; I didn't like any of the ones I saw.  I wound up using a rich red cardstock from Paper Source and a gold "parchment" paper from Staples, abandoning stars here.  The STD said" Declaration of Independence...on second thought SAVE THE DATE!!"  The invitations are actually foldover.  The outside says "US Constitution....We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union......what a great idea!!" Open it up and there is the invitation.

If you want to find me, I'm usually on the etiquette and wedding party boards.

    Good luck.

What about something more understated.  Maybe more of a 40's WWII theme instead of a more flag inspired theme.  You could do a deeper red and a darker blue.  You could use old pics of old posters or pics like the one of the Sailor kissing the nurse in Times Square as decorations or table themes.  Think Ava Gardner, Audry Hepburn, and Ginger Rogers for style inspiration.  You could even do a big band for the reception to carry on the theme.  Drive away in an old 1940's Rolls Royce.
Here are some pics for ideas:

Thanks for the tips I really like the 40's WWII theme. My FI is an old soul who likes old movies and music, so I think that it would be something he could get into. I also love that first pic you linked, thats right up my alley.

Props to the girl above for going for the 1776 theme that sounds cool. I'm not sure if thats the direction I want to go but you have awesome ideas.

The other great thing about a vintage feel is the awesome fashion. The retro and vintage board on TK is very active.

Congrats on your engagement! I'm marrying my Marine in October and I had a lot of trouble coming up with what colors and/or theme to use. I definitely didn't want to go overly patriotic, because like others said it becomes a little cheesy and looks like a political convention. My fiance of course will be in his dress blues, and I'm sure you are finding out that they are a little difficult to work with. Obviously you can do whatever colors you want, but I'm definitely the type of person that wants everything coordinating so I was not about to do something like pink. Eventually I decided to run with his uniform and I decided to do a deep fall red, with accents of ivory (to compliment my dress) and gold (to compliment his uniform). I think choosing either red or blue (not both) and then adding in some neutral accent colors will keep it looking very classy. We are pulling in the military/patriotic theme with small touches like the sword arch and cutting the cake with the sword. Also, instead of just simply numbering our tables we are making them each named after a USMC base, getting an aerial photo of the base, making it look vintage and putting it in a frame to identify the tables. Our escort tags will be personalized dog tags with the guests names, their table name and our wedding date! Small, unique touches that people will remember will personalize your military wedding and keep a theme going without it looking like the 4th of July! Good luck!

Oh! I also forgot another fun way to pull in the military theme. If either of you have parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or other special guests attending that served in the military you can display old pictures of them in nice vintage frames as a way to not only add the military theme but honor their service.  Don't forget to label who they are, their rank, time served and branch of service! All four of our grandfathers served (3 Army, 1 Marines) so we are using the old, vintage pictures and displaying them on our escort card table at the reception. I'm really excited about this part!

Also keep in mind that patriotic doesn't have to scream red white and blue. You can incoporate things that are uniquely "Americanlike mini bar-b-que sliders, lemonade or iced tea served in cute mason jars, Big Band music, country music band during your cocktail hour. maybe things like that?

I'm in the middle of planing the whole Patriotic wedding theme. My hubby and I did the whole run away and get married thing before he went over seas. So we are doing the big wedding and renewing our wedding vows when he gets back home. So far I have done my dress in white and have added the red into it. I'm think the girls are going to be in the blue and I'm not sure if the flower girl will be in white with the blue or red yet and since his in the Army we are not sure if he will be in his new dress blues or the old greens all depends on what he has ready when he gets home.  The American flag will be a big part and I'm waiting to use the army flag as well in some way. We are going to be getting married at Camp Perry in Ohio also so it brings a little more of the military into it. The cake I'm having the hardest time with right now I think on what to do with it cause I want it to be just right. Tables will be done in white and the centers will have a 3 stair heart candel piece with red white and blue stones along with a vacs done up and a flag inside of that.  It looks better then it sounds I think but there are some of the ideas I have had.
