Making our own food for the wedding?

My finace and I are trying to save as much money as possible. His family is HUGE on cooking and they want to make all the food for the wedding. He has a big family so I'm not worried about it not getting done, I just need to know what kind of food we should make?? We were thinking a buffet style? Any ideas???

If you're 100% sure that you want his family to cater, I say go for it!  It's very generous of them to offer.  Depending on how many guests you're expecting, I'd suggest going with foods that hold up well in a buffet.  Think baked ham, potatoes, veggies, lasagna, etc.

What kinds of foods do you like?  Pick something that's a crowd-pleaser and go from there :)

Are they also going to be serving and cleaning up?

We are doing all our own food as well. We have over 200 guest and we are going a pig roast and a pasta bar. Cheap and good food !!!

We're doing a taco bar. We're doing it ourselves and hiring people to serve/cleanup. It's going to be a small wedding, though, about 30 people. I'm also planning to do the cake myself. Did the first attempt this weekend. Not half bad.

Okay I've been thinking about it.. would it be cheaper to get a caterer after all rather than buying all the food to cook? How much did y'all spend on food?

I have been looking at caterers that range from $19.95 pp to $43 pp.
