Arm Exercises

Alright, so I know I should have hit the gym probably before the ring ever got on my finger. I tried, I procrastinated, it didn't work out the way I hoped. I'm okay with it for the most part, but I'm 66 days until the wedding and I would like to do something about my arms! My dress is a halter, and while I will have a tan, which, from my experience creates a shadow that slims the arm, I'd like to get rid of some of the arm flab I've got.

My FI was a weight lifter in high school and told me that arms can transform really quickly, since they hold fat differently. He said if I start now, I will see results by the wedding. The problem is, he knows exercises to increase muscle mass and bulk up, not necessarily tone.

I bought weights at Five Below. Anyone have any exercises they would suggest? Or videos? i'm a fan of the workout video...

The best my arms ever looked was when I was doing Jiliian Michaels' Shred It With Weights (click for Amazon link).  It's a kettlebell workout, so the regular dumbbells you bought won't work.  But you can get a 15 lb kettlebell at Target for under $20.

    Good luck!

<div>Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but from my understanding, I don't think it's an issue. You need to build muscle in order to tone it, and your muscles need to be worked hard in order to tone. So, if you are just starting to work out you should start with weight you are comfortable with and then go up gradually. Don't be afraid of using heavier weights, they really will help. </div><div>
</div><div>I go to bootcamp several times a week, for men and women, and we all do the same exercises. You won't bulk up like a bodybuilder unless you are in fact, training like a bodybuilder.</div></div><div>
</div><div>ETA: Push-ups, different kinds of curls and presses, and dips have always worked well for me :)</div><div>

  • Thanks for the advice! I never thought of it the way you put it, Jane, but it makes sense. I'm not planning on getting into any body building competitions! Just don't want my arms to keep waving after I've stopped moving my hand! LOL I'll definitely be looking up the Jillian Michaels DVD. That woman is hard core. My friends use some of her other videos and it works. I'd like to lose some weight all around, but since my dress is almost done with alterations, I sort of have to stay where I'm at otherwise it will become too big!! I swear it's like being stuck between a rock and a hard place!!

I'll be looking up those items and doing some online shopping tonight!!
  • Well good luck to you. Even if your dress winds up being too big, it's a happy problem, right? That's what seamstresses are for.

I agree with Jane. You can tone areas but you need to have a muscle base. I posted in a thread about weights and cardio that has some good upper body exercises in it.

I suggest Jackie Warners Time Saver X-Training.

  • This is my problem too! I work out (with a kettle ball) but really am only seeing a difference in my shoulders. I'm 39 days away! One thing I do know is that you need to increase your protein, cut out sugar and diet sodas, and drink lots of water. In the end, I realize that the only one who is going to be focused on my arms is me. And I plan to be focused on my fiance instead!
  • Yes, you'll need muscle on your arms in order to tone it. But more importantly, you'll need to shed the fat on top of the muscle in order to get that 'toned' look.

OP, choose a weight that you struggle with on the last 2-3 reps. You'll most likely need a few different dumbbells. For example, I use 5 or 8lbs. for triceps and 10 or 12lbs for biceps.
