Moving to Austin- house locating help (XP from the Nest)

Hi Ladies,

My FI and I are moving to Austin in July/August when he finishes his time with the Army. I went to UT but lived in the campus area the whole time so I am not familiar with where nice "beginner" neighborhoods are for couples. We would probably be renting at first, but may consider buying depending on a few variables that are up in the air atm.

We are looking for a small 2-3 bedroom home around the $1000 range. Does that exist? Ha Smile We are open to pretty much any area.

Any suggestions of neighborhoods, locators, etc would be very hepful! TIA!

My fiance and I looked at renting an apartment but it turned out to be about the same to buy/build a new house. Of course there are pros and cons to renting vs. buying but we decided the pros outweighed the cons for buying a house. Check out kbhome.com...they have tons of neighborhoods around Austin and have lots of sizes, floorplans and price ranges.

We rent a house in the Wells Branch neighborhood.  It's in far North Austin...safe neighborhood with small houses and a great big park/pool/walking trails/duck pond.  We've been here 2 yrs and are signing a lease for another 2 yrs.  Only 15 min from downtown (when there's no traffic of course), by either Mopac or I-35.  We absolutely love the neighborhood b/c it's so not the 'burbs.  And our 3 bedroom house is 1166 sq feet, plus a fenced in back yard, a garage, trees, and it's only $995 a month.

    Best of luck!

www.realtor.com is THE best website for your search. You will probably be looking at living a little out of the center of the city, though.

We're paying about that for a 3 bedroom in Cedar Park.

Thanks for the replies ladies. We looked at a few neighborhoods this weekend in Kyle and Buda because their new home prices were extremely affordable. We are definitely leaning towards buying now that we've discovered prices aren't as outrageous if you aren't IN the city.

I'm still open to all suggestions for anyone else that wants to reply!

Saw someone listed realtor.com - however I'd say that Austin Home Search is even better - http://www.austinhomesearch.com

Its connected to the MLS directory, so pretty much any house for sale will be listed on there. They also have a search for leases if you are interested in renting.

My fiance and I decided to purchase as well since it was going to be about the same to rent. We are just waiting to hear back on our closing date, should be any day now - getting excited!!

I love the 78745 area - near Central Market, Westgate, highways, etc and has lots of charm.

I've used Paul with Lone Star Realty for the last several moves and even for the house I purchased, and then moved out of. He's great. Super flexible and helpful at finding places to show you based on your criteria. You should be able to find him if you google him. If not, send me a PM and I'll send you his number. GL!
