Bump It for Wedding Updo?

So in my never-ending quest to stay within our new (lower) wedding budget, I've decided to take my friend up on her offer to do my hair for the wedding.  She is in hair styling school (I'm sure that's not what it's officially called - sorry!), but has yet to learn bridal updos.  Instead, she told me that she is pretty skillful with the bump-it hair styling piece and wants to use one on me for the wedding.

I am concerned about it staying up and in all day long and was wondering if any of you gals have used one before?

Suggestions/recs appreciated!

I had to LOL at this post because I met with a stylist who wanted to use a Bump-It for my updo! I bought 3 of them because I wasn't sure which color would be best. Needless to say, every trial she did I could see the bump-it and I was not feeling it. I have very thin hair though and you could see it right through. I say try it out and see what you think. If you need a Bump-It let me know. I have 3 and I don't want them haha. They are all yours!

Is that kind of style something you like? Just because it's something that she says she can do doesn't mean it's right for you on your wedding day. If it is your style, I'd say follow jonny's advice and try one out first. If it doesn't work or look right, you want to know well in advance so you can figure out the right style.

Also, are you dead set on an updo? There are so many gorgeous styles out there, it might be worth it to play around with different looks.

I bought the Bump-Its and hated them.  It looked nothing like the pictures and looked like a had a V on my head.

They have them at Walgreens for 10 bucks.  I would try them out first.

I have to be honest, I was just introduced to this bumpit thingy the other day on another board and the pictures I saw looked "wanna be southern belle" tacky. Think yayas on steroids.  BUT, like anything else, if it is done right I am sure it will look just fine.

Hmmm..now I'll really have to look into this.  I'm not sold on the bump-it or the updo style.  My friend insists that updo is the only way for a bride to go for a wedding, however.

Honestly, I'd love to wear my hair down if possible, especially in September - it won't be too warm or anything.

We'll see what I end up with...thanks for the input ladies!!!

No offense to your friend, but has she seen any wedding photography from the past 5 years? I'd say the updo is much less the norm these days.

Check out Meaghan's married profile, she had a gorgeous half up/half down style. Also, if you google "wedding hairstyles" you can see tons of different styles.

No way do you have to have an updo!  If you want to wear it down, go for it.  Or you can pull it back away from your face a bit for a more formal look, but leave it mostly down in the back. It is common these days.
Check out these pics for some inspiration:

I have also never had a hair stylist suggest a bump it for volume.  To create movement and volume around the top of the head, they usually start my updos by curling every single piece of hair--even if the ultimate style isn't super curly.  Then, they tease it a bit.  Then, they pull it back into the style and loosen up the curls to achieve the desired texture.  Those first two steps create volume and movement without using a bumpit.

...I wore my hair mostly down, but pulled away from my face, with loose curls.  Here are a couple pictures:

...the bottom line is that you should be able to decide what you want, and set up a long afternoon where you can sit down with your friend and practice.  I would do a couple trials if I were you (due to her relative inexperience) and just keep working on it until you are happy.  Maybe she'll learn something in the process too, so it can be win-win?
