1000 Paper Cranes

My fiance and I are folding 1000 paper cranes for our wedding and plan to put them on display at the reception.  My question: should I put an explanation of the symbolism of the cranes in our program, or should we just plan to explain it a bunch at the reception?  My fiance's grandmother came to America from Japan as a young woman, so most of his family will know the meaning, it will be my family asking the questions.  What do you think?

Re: 1000 Paper Cranes

  • I love that legend!  I just don't have the patience to fold that many cranes.

A lovely little blurb would be perfect in the program.  Otherwise you probably will have at least a couple of people going "What the heck are all these cranes for?"  It's too lovely of a sentiment to be lost on anyone.

[QUOTE]What about doing a sign somewhere near where the cranes (or at least a large portion of them) are displayed that explains it? I think a program note would be weird if you are using them at the reception because the program is about the ceremony, and I usually don't even have mine anymore by the time I get to the reception.

<div>That makes sense.  What if I include a crane with each program to tie it in (and get rid of some!)?  Putting a blurb in the program sounds easier to me than making a sign... </div>
  • I was thinking a sign too...maybe near where the table cards are or the guest book.

    Beautiful idea!!
  • I think they are intended as decoration more than favors
  • I did this at my first wedding and we just printed out an explanation and put it in a frame and put it on the guestbook table as you entered the recepetion. Worked for us!

They're typically strung together and hung or draped over one another. Here's a picture taken at the Hiroshima Peace Park with the statue of Sasaki Sadako:

  • We did not have a program but rather a limited menu for the reception and we explained the meaning of our favor there. Not sure if you were planning on a reception type program/menu. I liked the idea of a framed explanation by the guest book or near the paper cranes.
