NWR: Seasonal Jobs/Getting a second job

Have any of you worked a holiday-season job before?  I'm considering applying for one, but we need to travel for Thanksgiving and Christmas to see our families.  I'm assuming that management would laugh me out of the store if I need these days off.  Correct?

So that leaves other options for getting a second job, one that would only need me on weekends (I travel for Job 1 during the week).  I'm stuck on where to even look for this, because I think most retail jobs would expect some hours to be done during the week.  Any ideas?

I have worked in restaurants and retail, they probably wouldn't give you more than a day or two of ffor the holidays.  However, looking for weekend work is definitely possible because a lot of people don't want those shifts.  Hotels may be a decent one to look into as well, but again you may not get holidays off.

My guess is that you would't be able to request those days off as a seasonal employee - especially with the job market the way it is, I don't see companies hurting for finding help.  But it's certainly worth a shot :)

I agree that you might be able to work just weekends as that is when things are SUPER busy during the holidays.  I guess it just depends on the store.

I don't think you'd be hired as a seasonal employee if you'll be gone for the holidays but otherwise I think people who are willing to work weekends are definitely in demand in retail! It's been a long time since I worked retail but I remember everyone always arguing about who got stuck with Saturday/Sunday shifts.

It might be harder than you think though.. a couple years ago I tried applying for seasonal jobs just for fun and some extra money since my man was away with the military anyway- I have a master's degree, lots of work experience, and didn't get a call back from anywhere!!

I've worked at Macys for a few holiday seasons and have always had a pretty flexible schedule.  I've been able to take Christmas eve and the day after Christmas off each year.  There is a new scheduling program at Macys where you go online and pick out what hours you want so you can work as many or as few hours as you would like.  I am assuming you could only work weekends if that is what you preferred.  Macys is hiring something like 30,000 employees this holiday season.

    Good luck :)
