Wedding Invitations & Paper

Which font and how's the wording? (PIP)

I've drafted two mockups for our invitations in Microsoft Word. Which font do you like for our names? I'm having trouble deciding!
Also, what do you think about the wording? (My dad is paying. He is remarried, and my mother is deceased, so she wont be mentioned.) Groom's parents aren't contributing to the wedding itself but I'd like to mention them, is this appropriate?
It is a Christian ceremony but not being held in a church.

We are printing our own on this Anna Griffin set I bought from Michael's:

I'm sorry if you can't see them... can't figure out how to make the picture bigger.

Re: Which font and how's the wording? (PIP)

  • I strongly prefer the first. The second is pretty, but you've got a lot of ascenders and descenders in both names and it's really hard to read, especially Elizabeth, which is virtually illegible in that font. FWIW, I wouldn't put the reception info in the same font as your names -- I'd keep it in the same font as the rest of the invitation.
  • Agreed! Good to hear another's opinion, I've been staring at them too long! And good point about the reception info, I was just going off the example the kit came with, which had it the same as the names.

  • Definitely prefer the first!

  • I prefer the fonts in the first but the wording is incorrect:

If your father's full name is Don then the name is fine.  If it's short for Donald then that should be spelled out.  I'd change it to:

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ian Black
request the honour of your presence (the ceremony is in a house of worship and therefore honour of your presence is requested)
at the marriage of their daughter

    Kathryn Elizabeth

    to

Christopher Ryan White (no title for your FI if no title for you)

son of Mr. and Mrs. James White
    Friday, the first of April
    two thousand and eleven
half after seven in the evening (past is for funerals)
    Church of the King
    Covington, KY

  • To answer the question in your post:
I don't think only one set of parents should be mentioned, just because his parents aren't financially contributing doesn't mean they shouldn't be mentioned, he's stil a son of so-and-so. And I think his parents on the invite too is appropriate. All or none in my opinion

I agree with banana468  on the wording
  • Banana - thanks for the tips! But, his full name is Don and the ceremony is not in a house of worship. Also i put "his daughter" because the "Mrs. Prieto" is his new wife, my stepmother. Am I wrong?

  • Ahh OK.

I'm confused - the invitation says that the ceremony is in a church.  It isn't a house of worship?

As for the wording on your father and his daughter - now that makes perfect sense.  :-)
  • OH! Lol, my fault, I know why we're confused. I changed the last names and place so as not to put all our info on the internet... "Church of the King" was just the first thing that came to mind and it didnt occur to me how this would change the wording of the invite. Sorry!

  • I like the first font better. It looks more elegant.

And I have a similar situation with finances and wording.
My fiance's parents are actually paying for a good part of the wedding and FI and I are paying for the rest, but we didn't want my mom to feel like she didn't have a part in it or be self-conscious about it (long story).

    Our final wording is:

"Because you have shared in their lives with your friendship and love
Together with Mr. and Mrs. Groom's Parents and Ms. Bride's Mom
    Bride
    and
    Groom
request the honour of your presence
as they are united in marriage
    Sunday, the Seventh of November
    Two Thousand Ten
at Three O'Clock in the afternoon

    Ceremony info//Reception info"

And due to the fact that we have a 400 person guest list and a large portion of them are under 21 and didn't quite understand wedding etiquette when it came to the Save the Dates and acquiring addresses and were inviting a significant amount of people that weren't on our list along with a few family members who would cause severe damage should they hear about it and show up, after seeking counsel with our parents and pastor, added By invitation only at the bottom of our invites.
  • The first font is much better AND matches your invite style much better than the 2nd one.
  • I like the first font better. I think it's prettier and a lot more legible.
  • Not sure if I'm too late, but the wording regarding your father and step-mother paying for the wedding of just HIS daughter sounds weird.  Could you just put something like "Together with their parents..." or are you perhaps close enough to your step mom to consider her your parent so that it says "their daughter" or maybe do something else entirely?  I only ask because the grammar/syntax seems a bit off the way you have it.

  • I also love the first one.

    Wording suggestions:
Mr. and Mrs. Don Ian Black
request the honour of your presence
at the marriage of his daughter <- his daughter. I am sorry your mother has passed on. :(

    Kathryn Elizabeth

    to

    Christopher Ryan White

son of Mr. and Mrs. James White
    Friday, the first of April
two thousand eleven <- delete "and"
half after seven o'clock in the evening
    Church of the King
Covington, Kentucky <- spell out state

    Reception immediately following
  • Year line: with or without "and" is correct. Your choice.

at the marriage of his daughter -- totally correct.

totally appropriate to name your groom's parents as "son of" so and so. Going with "Together with their parents" works best when there are a bunch of parents listed and they are all hosting.
