  First off you shouldn't be throwing your own shower. And second of all just because you've been to these thing before doesn't make it right. It's rude to tell people what they have to bring or buy you.  If someone else offers to throw you a shower let them worry about the details.

  Just because this was an actual occurence at a shower does NOT mean it's is acceptable. I would seriously side-eye any pre-wedding party where it was encouraged to put money on a tree; especially if it was to help the couple pay for their HM. 
  
  In response to your question, whoever is throwing you the shower (though by the way you phrased your post it appears you are throwing yourself a shower), should let your guests know where you are registered but also that you would welcome gifts to prepare you for your "Mexican honeymoon".
