Hi!  Has anyone gone to LA flower district for their wholesale flowers? Did you have a good experience?  I have a DIY budget wedding in October 2011 and was thinking I can just buy a bunch of flowers and arrange my bouquet and centerpieces myself.  Been looking at videos online and looks simple enough to do.

    I don't know if they're older or what, but my flowers from downtown always wilt and dry up faster. Just buy some from a couple vendors to try them out first. Another option is to see what kind of deals you can get on grocery store flowers. I hear good things about Albertsons.

    My mom and I get flowers all the time from the LA flower mart and they are SO affordable and great! Unlike Helsa, I have never had a problem with the flowers dying early. We did all the flowers for my sister's wedding 2 days in advance and it worked out great! We will be doing the same for my wedding next summer. Good luck!

    I went to the downtown LA flower district, they really have good prices.  If you have the manpower to do it yourself, you can really save alot of money. 

    Go early if you want to get better flowers....most vendors close by like 11AM.

    Been there and never had a problem with the flowers going bad fast. Defenitely go early because the best vendors open really early and close early.

    How far in advance did you buy your flowers before the wedding and do you remember when they started to wilt?

    I haven't gotten flowers for my wedding yet, but I went twice and got flowers for some test runs and by the next morning they didn't look as good. I'm not sure if maybe I was dong something wrong? the boutonnieres that  I put in the refrigerator looked good for awhile, but anything I left in a vase with water overnight just looked old the next day. Any tips? I could keep all the bouquets in the refrigator for the wedding, but I definitely can't do that with the large arrangements!

    I went to the flower mart for my wedding but only for the centerpieces. My mom hired a florist for the bouquets, bouts and corsages.
    I went 2 weeks before the wedding and bought the flowers i wanted from the vendors i planned to order from just to see how long they would last. then the week before the wedding i went down and placed orders with the vendors for pick up on friday (the day before the wedding). Then that morning we just went and picked them up, had a group at my mom's to help prep them and that was it! i got lots of compliments on the flowers and they lasted well in to the next week!
    btw, i got the vases at the dollar tree and mason jar-vases at michaels with a 20% off coupon. Totally reasonable!

    ETA: ask the vendors when they get their shipments. Most i talked to get them on mon, wed and fri. So i specifically asked for the order that came in the friday that i was picking up. I think that helped a lot with getting them fresh because in the past i have purchased flowers there that looked like crap as early as the next day.

    There are many flower shops in that area that will do the arrangements fo ryou downtown prices. I am getting centerieces of roses, orchids, and  (with some curly willow braches) in 20" vases for $30 a centerpiece. You just have to go from store to stor and bargain with them until you get what you want.

    My sister got her flowers for her wedding at the flower district. I don't want to be negative but it was a pain in the @$$! 

    We picked up all the flowers the night before at 3am, storage was a NIGHTMARE because they all have to be cooled. They don't come prepped so we were picking out thorns and everything. Then we had to buy all the containers and the foam stuff which is not heap. PLUS on the day of her wedding morning all the bridesmaids were trying to put together flowers and get dressed at the same time. Then we had to set them all up at the church and venue and stay after the wedding to remove them all. 

    My nails looked like crap and my allergies were a mess. After factoring in the flowers, containers, tools and our time she didn't save much money at all. The flowers were nice but no where near professional. I would suggest hiring someone. It's just not worth it...


    Again don't want to be negative just my two cents.

    Highly recommend! They open REALLY early- if you want to pick your flowers the day of your wedding.
