Anyone been to Barefoot Cay on Roatan?

Fiance' and I are narrowing things down and have a travel agent sending ideas to us. Recently, she sent us info on a tiny bungalow resort on the Island "Barefoot Cay" in Roatan, Honduras. From the looks of it, it seems like the perfectly quiet private beach we want at our budget. There are a few mentions on Trip Advisor about sand flies on the beach  being a problem there. I'm pretty ignorant about the Carribean. Do you find such biting flies frequently on the beaches? I live in Northern MI and know all too well our beach flies, and don't want that for our honeymoon. We want to enjoy lying on the sand a lot!

One other complaint I hear was regarding the nearby industrial shipping being noisey. If anyone has any experience with Barefoot Cay or Roatan in general, I would love to hear your opinion!

  • I just returned from Roatan last week. Stayed at Infinity Bay and loved it. The resort was great, but not quite secluded if that's what you're looking for. I didn't see barefoot cay, so can't comment. We didn't really have any problems with sand flies. But, at dusk, there are lots of mosquitos so bring bug spray. They go away once the sun has set. I loved Roatan!! If you go, get in touch with Julie and Ed from Radical Adventures for a great day on their catamaran.

  • We recently went on a cruise that stopped at Roatan. I don't know a lot about the island's resorts or anything, but I can tell you that it was the most beautiful place I've ever been to. It's not as built up/touristy as a lot of the islands in the Carribbean. We snorkled around a ship wreck and spent time on a beautiful secluded beach in a cove. I would love to go back and spend a week or so there, so I think Roatan is a great option for a honeymoon for you!!

Thanks! It does sound nice and quiet. The only frequent mention I am worried about are the biting flies and I've hears others say the wind is always present and so strong that you can't read a book on the beach at the Cay. Hoping I can find out if that is the case. Reviews are so excellent about this place, but I know we want to really luxurate on the beach a lot, so want that experience to be good.
