Do you think these flowers will work together?++

Okay, first keep in mine I am DIYing my flowers, and ordering them from Sam's Club, so I'm keeping it pretty simple. Also, my wedding colors are green & white.

For bouquets, I was going to get white hydrangeas and carnations. My bouquet would be only white hydrangeas; the bridesmaid bouquets would be white hydrangeas and the carnations, but I will "dye" them green with food coloring (I'd rather do this myself than order green carnations, so I can control the shade of green they are).

For my centerpieces I am having different sizes/shapes of milk glass vases, 3-4 per table, with a stem of light pink spray roses in each vase, and more of the green carnations. (Most of my vases are bud vases and can't fit more than 1 stem, which is why I like the spray roses since there's a few buds on each stem, even though they're smaller).

What do you think? I'm not a big flower person, so it's hard for me to find ones I like. Plus, our reception is mostly outdoors, in Spring, with tons of flowering bushes and trees, so I don't want my centerpieces to try and compete with that.

  • I can offer a better ides.. you can order mini green hydrangeas from Sams club too..as well as  the larger white hydrangea.  They are the immature cuts from the bigger plants and very very pretty flowers..also a natural green and won't need to be dyed.
Dying is not a good idea..it can bleed and stain and it never looks particularly natural.
Rather than adding another color you might use a green mini hydrangea and little white spray carnations or roses in your budvases.
then mini green hydrangeas and carns for the girls and white spry roses and white hydrangeas for you?

love these mini baby green hydrangeas... fresh and so pretty!  their leaves are a nice deep green too so if you are working with kelly green as a goal they will be a much more natural way to bring green into the fold... easier to work with than carnations too... less likely to break off...

just a thought... probably an easier combo and about the same cost too..  love green and white in any form!
  • Okay, after doing a whole lot of math and discussing with DF (because for some reason I couldn't describe what I was trying to do!) I figured out what I'm doing:

Green mini Hydrangeas (like PP mentioned) - for bridesmaids & centerpieces
White (reg) Hydrangeas - for bridal & bridesmaid bouquets
Pink mini Carnations - for centerpieces

The Carnations are half the price of the Spray Roses. And the quantities add up to the right amount of flowers I need, instead of my previous idea which would leave me with a lot of extras (and the hassle of dyeing the Carnations!)

Thanks for making me think twice about the green mini Hydrangeas, it'll make my life easier and save me some money (surprisingly!)
  • Does it actually cost more if you buy green carnations?

  • You will love those mini green hydrangeas...
One suggestion i have is to get your flowers delivered around monday and cut and put them into a warm water to hydrate...
The mini greens will plump up and grow a bit more and so will the carnations.. It is good to give them the extra time to hydrate...  Use deep warm water with a dropof bleach in it and just let them drink in a cool spot until about thursday when you put them together...

    Lol  great stuff!
  • Here's a point to consider, your reception is outside, therefore it might be windy which might knock the vases over.  Use a vase with a wide and heavy base.  If you want to colour the carnations, dye them through the stem.  They look more natural that way.  Bunches Bob
