Great dress for different body types?

I have 5 bridesmaids, each of which is a diffent body type. Does anyone know of a good gown shape that will work good for each? I was thinking about an organza empire waist that goes to the floor...

1)Avg Height, Medium/Avg Build
2)Short, Thin frame
3)Short, Medium/Curvy Build
4)Avg Height/Curvy
5)Tall (6ft), Medium Build

Re: Great dress for different body types?

  • Can you take all the girls shopping together to see what looks good on them or what they like?

Or, maybe have them pick out their own dresses?

Since it's hard to find one type of dress to suit different body types, a lot of people will let their BM pick out their own dress, after giving them a color, and maybe length/straps/fabric guidelines, and then they can find something that looks good on them. That's what I did, and my 3 Bm picked out very beautiful, complementary dresses that look great next to one another.

I'm about 5'4 and a size 12. A dress like that would make me look pregnant (or a large column since it doesn't define a waist). If you're set on having all five ladies in the same dress then I suggest having them go to the store and try on dresses. If you're able to be there to see them all, great, it not then have them take pictures. If you'd like to make it easier on everyone, let them all select their own style in a color and length you want.

I know that the empire waist, flowy fabric, style is often recommended as being flattering to all figures. The truth is that it is equally unflattering on all figures! My eldest is a 5'6" size 6, super curvy girl, a dress like that makes her look fat and stubby. My second is 6' size 8 athletic build. A dress like that makes her look muscle bound and quite frankly like a man in drag!

A dress that is a-line with a defined natural waist would likely be the most flattering. Another option would be to narrow the choices down and let them all choose their own dress. Pick a designer, color, fabric and length and they will all look their best!
  • Yeah a dress like that just wouldn't work. I have girls that are all different sizes and I tried on dresses for my girls too and what works best for us was a more structured dress. Anything flowy will make them look big or give them no shape. We picked a cotton dress that fits my FSIL who is a size 4 to another BM who is a 16 and they all look wonderful.
  • I'm voting no on the empire waist - I'm a pretty average size, and every empire waist thing I've ever tried to wear makes me look six months pregnant.

Go shopping with as many of them as can make the appointment (doesn't need to be everyone, 3 out of 5 is plenty), and start trying things out. You will probably be surprised at what is and isn't flattering, and you may stumble upon something that works for everyone. If you don't find something that works for everyone, just set some guidelines - length, color, possibly fabric and brand - and let them choose different dresses.

my bm's are mixed as well. this is the dress we picked:
i only was able to go shopping with 2 out of 7 of them since most are spread around the world and it looked very good on both of them. one was shorter w/ cuves and my MOH, my sister is a little taller w/ a straighter body, not much curve. and it flattered both of them.
also i suggest if you do want everyone in the same dress that you pick 2-3 styles you like and have them decide between them which one they like the best. this way you still get a look you want (if you care about that) but they have a say in what makes them feel comfortable and pretty!

    This....

And if you're very concerned with them matching, you can also tell them a specific designer, to ensure all of the shades of the colour are the same. Then all of the girls can pick out a dress to fit their body type, but still look cohesive.

If you are 100% set on them having the same dresses... find an a-line. It's the most universally flattering shape. In my best friend's wedding we had a tall girl who was skinny as a rail, a tall girl with a curvy figure, a medium height girl with a curvy figure, and little old munchkin me (SUPER short, pretty darn curvy). We all felt comfortable in this dress (and it also comes in a long version): http://www.dessy.com/dresses/bridesmaid/6575/
