NWR: What is the Catholic chuch's view on cord blood banking?

Hi girls,

I'm already married but I need a Catholic board to ask... what is the Catholic church's view on cord blood banking? Does anyone know?

i have no idea what the official view is, but the cord and blood is not a human life, so i cant see how/why it would be an issue.

I have never heard an official statement but I can't imagine a reason why the Church would oppose it. If anything I think it would be a good thing because (from what I understand from my limited reading) cords/cord blood are potentially a morally acceptable alternative for research etc as opposed to embryonic stem cells.

Thanks... I knew the church opposed stem cell research but I don't even really know what that is or why they oppose it and I wasn't sure if cord blood banking had anything to do with it.

the church is opposed to stem cell research that utilizes embryos, since the church considers embryos to be human life.  tehrefore, extricating cells causes death to the embryo.

    Good to clarify

embryonic stem cells are the problem, not regulary stem cell research. It's good to note that all the medical advances that have happened because of stem cell research have NOT come from embryos but regular kind...which comes from umbilical cord blood, among other things. Church is all for it.

hm, I never really thought about it.

I bought the cord blood banking for M when she had her first child.  The ILs did it for the second baby.

I would assume it was fine because it's using materials from the umbilical cord, not from live embryo cellls

I just heard someone ask this question on catholic answers on the radio. It is totally acceptable and even encouraged.
