Do I get my license returned automatically or do I have to buy it? Really worried!

We got married October 15th (Cook County) and I have not received anything in the mail yet from the state or county. I only get 30 days to change my insurance at work and that's almost up so I'm freaking out now...

The day of the wedding I got something from the priest and it is at my parent's house right now which is ~50 miles away and my dad said it just looks like something I would frame, not a legal document. That's about as helpful as he was lol

Am I supposed to send this fancy doc to the state/county? What is this fancy document? Does the priest send the document I gave him initially to the county and then I automatically get what I need to change my name? How long does it take to get it back? I'm so worried about this and I can't get anyone I know to answer my questions.

I was worried too. The priest just gave us something similar like you said. I went online to the Cook County Clerk's office website and ordered a copy of the certificate and it came a week or two later. We had to give our church our copy of the marriage license, so I think the church sent that back with a confirmation that we were married.

    HTH!

Thanks! So the county never actually sent something to you after he sent it in, you had to purchase it?

you have to buy  copies. The priest send  it in and IF you  bought them ahead of time then you get  them in the mail. It you did not buy copies  when you  got your marriahe lisence then you do not get any thing.

<div>Yes this, they only mail copies if you purchased copies in addition to the actual license. Otherwise they don't send anything.</div>

If you are really worried about this, I would go in person to get copies of your marriage certificate. We took ours in the day after we got married and ordered our copies then.

I wasn't married in Cook county, so I can't help on that end...but for insurance; are being added to his or is he being added to yours?

My insurance also gave me 30 days from the date of the wedding to update or opt out of my current insurance plan.

Thanks everyone! I have copies now yay - I will be switching to his insurance and I'm hoping that's easier than everything that had to do with the wedding.

Speaking of stressful, difficult things I just found out that I was supposed to notify the Secretary of State within 10 days that my name is changing....I had no idea, what does this mean now? Will I just get a verbal scolding or what happens?  A friend of mine got married in July and hasn't changed her name yet and she's waiting until after a trip in February.
